I have a friend with a Bushmaster Varminter having a heck of a time removing the free float tube.  Is it  a two piece setup, or do you just remove the FSB/ gas tube and put a strap wrench on it and spin the whole works off?  Is a special tool needed to get at the barrel nut from the back side?

A free float barrel nut wrench is the recommended tool for removing FF tube nuts.
