Need some help decideing on some Target ammo that is not fmj for my colt match target m4 1/7 barrel twist 16.1 inch barrel the barrel is stamped 5.56 nato so I figured 5.56 ammo would be ok to use in it.the reciever has .223 on it.

5.56 is OK to use. Why must it NOT be FMJ???

Most of the ranges here in the area do not allow fmj on the rifle ranges. Thanks

do you have to shoot Soft Point? If so, that's expensive.

If they allow HP ammo the 45gr USA stuff isn't too expensive at Wal-Mart and it's surprisingly accurate. Or get some Black Hills BTHP match stuff from GPSS.

Why wouldn't they allow FMJ though? None of the ranges around here care.

ya the garland public shooting range states this on their website it is an outdoor range.

Range Rules:
1. No full metal jacket ammunition to be fired on the rifle range. (FMJ pistol is OK)

the 45 grain umc stuff that comes in bulk packs tends to make some nice groups. Its fairly inexpensive to boot.

I suggest you visit the websites listed in the thumbtacked topic thread titled "Internet Ammo Price List".

I'm sure Natchez Shooters Supply and Cabela's offer a reasonable selection of .223Remington ammunition with hunting bullets. The other vendors are worth a few mouse-clicks of investigation too.
Basically, a .223Remington cartridge will fit into a 5.56NATO chamber, but the reverse isn't always so. There are Topics and FAQ 's that cover the specifics.
To learn if ammunition is reccomended by others on the forum, you could browse the thumbtacked topic thread titled "Ammunition review and reference" and/or use the search function.

The other topics thumbtacked to the top of the forum are worth reading too.

My Colt 1/7 M4 gets 1.14" with Gederal 50 hp flat base white box and 1.18" with HSM 69 grain HPBT commerical reloads. My 24" RRA 1/8 varminter gets .75" with both of the above loads. Both loads are fairly inexpensive.

I don't understand the logic on that, but whatever. I almost never shoot at ranges because of the over structured environment.

Well I wouldnt shoot at a range either if I had some land that I could just go shoot at when I wanted too.

Depending on where you live, there are plenty of places for you to shoot. Did you know you own land in many Western states?

Hmm I own land hmm thats interesting guess i was never told about it. I live near Garland /Mesquite area too bad tx ran out of free land for veterans..hinking.gif

Ok, well own is a strong word, it's not like you can sell it. Your Uncle owns it. And he says you can use it whenever you want. Not much of it in TX though.

My dad keeps telling me not to shoot FMJ in my backyard (have a dirt backstop) because it is more prone to ricochet than hollowpoints.

Any truth to this or is this an old wives tale?
