I see a lot of people talking about stocking up on nice M855, like IMI or LC. But I'm not quite understanding why you'd *stock up* on this kind of ammo.

From my understanding, good 5.56 is great ammo to get a good stock of for SHTF situations or when zeroing in your rifle, or maybe even for a match.

But why spend a premium on this stuff for plinking purposes? Seems like it's so much easer to pick up cheap 55gr FMJ brass, or even some steel stuff if you're okay with that, then spend so much money on thousands of rounds on M855 just to shoot it at paper targets.

So, just curious, what are you guys using your ammo for?

The premium ammo or "match grade ammo" will generally shoot consistent groupings as the whole manufacturing process will be held to a tighter level of quality.

This quality does come with a price though. As one gets more proficient with his rifle your accuracy "should" improve, hence the demand for more precise ammo.

I've never had this problem since my accuracy is limited to Minute-of-Soccer ball and even the best of ammos' won't help me.

I have a few thousand rounds of M855.  When I see a good deal on newer M855 I buy it and shoot an equal amount of the oldest in my stockpile.

Same with 55gr M192 which I shoot the most.  For plinking I use whatever in in the rotation.

I plink with my M855 cause its decently accurate, brass cased and cheap.
I stock up on it when I find deals on it for this purpose, since it allows me to get far more trigger time than if i only used premium ammo.
I keep stuff like TAP, TSX and Fusion for hunting and HD purposes.

I don't reload and my rifle functions with steel so I shoot wolf and silver bear mostly, but I do have a modest stockpile of other stuff.

Would YOU stock up if it was $125-$150 a thousand rounds? Maybe $175.00 on the high side?

Some say that you should always train with whatever you're going to use when SHTF. I like Russian ammo for SHTF work, so that's why I train with it and try to stock up on it when it's cheapest. Others will use m855 when SHTF, so thats why they shoot paper with it. Plus they must have a lot of money.

I haven't seen ammo for $150/k since the 90's.   I'd definately stock up at that price.

I wouldn't call M855 "premium", there's better stuff out there.  I stocked up on PMC M855 because it was about the cheapest brass cased ammo I could find.  It's not the most accurate/effective ammo out there, you will pay a premium for it though.

Agreed, X-TAC is the best deal going right now if you want 62g.  I stock up on m855 and m193 varients.  I reload also, so I find these a value because of the brass.

I stock up to help keep the .Gov in check.
