Not flaming you, just curious...

Why wouldn't someone just remove the carry handle and mount the ACOG on the rail?

If you want a carry handle mount use a fixed carry handle and save weight.

A2 upper saves .4 lbs

A1 upper saves .5 lbs

Thats a lot of weight.  The ONLY way I would use a carry handle mount was because I just had one handy and was too broke to afford an ARMS 19S.  Then the next month I would buy the 19S or sell the carry handle to help afford the 19S and not look back.

Compact acogs are made to be mounted on the carry handle, the use of the iron sights

If its a compact ACOG use a TA60 mount.  If you are going to use the carry handle why are you adding a half pound of needless weight to the rifle instead of using an A1 upper?  I still dont understand why anyone would select a carry handle mount.

I tried it because I didn't have a flat top mount.  I thought it sucked.  it was too high.  I now have a ta51 for it.  It's great now.

Im not a really big fan of carry handle mounting a full size ACOG either. But I do see the advantage of retaining the use of your irons.

Well, I can see a couple of advantages to mounting to a detachable carry handle over a fixed carry handle or flattop.

1) If you've just spent $800 on an optic, you can use an existing carry handle rather than spending $123 on an ARMS #19S and another $95 on an ARMS #40

2) Irons readily available

3) ACOG can be removed without losing zero by detaching the entire carry handle (nice for storage since the AR15 doesn't fit into racks with ACOG on top of fixed handle). Also nice for cleaning if you don't like solvent on your glass.

A fixed carry handle doesn't give you this option. It is real difficult to remove the scope and have it return to zero reliably. With a little work, you can get them to return to within 0.5-1MOA of zero but mine was off often enough that I was never comfortable with it.

4) Gas mask/Simunitions protective mask

Having said all that, I like the ARMS #40 and ARMS #19S combo a lot better if you can afford it; but I can see some valid reasons why someone would mount to a detachable handle.
