of why a Fobus handgaurd isn't worth a shit.
I was at the range today with a couple of friends and had been planning on helping one put a lower together. This friend had brought his brothers lower with him because he couldn't get an upper to mate to to it. He had tried a Model 1 upper and a Colt upper and it wouldn't fit on the RRA lower. When he told me about it, I assumed the walls were just a little thick so it shouldn't be to much of a problem.
When he took the lower out, I tried one of my M&A uppers on it, and it fit just fine. My friend took his Colt upper off his rifle and I wanted to try it myself. Well I tried pressing the two halves together and it wouldn't go and the two were stuck together. The Colt upper had a Fobus railed handgaurd on it with a Surfire M900 with the thow lever mount mounted on the bottom of the handgaurds. I smacked down on the M900 handle while trying to separate the upper and lower. Next thing I know the M900 was laying on the table with a big chunk of the handgaurd still attached to the light.
While I probably shouldn't of smacked down on the handle, I expected a little more strength out of the handgaurd. I would be willing to bet if someone had something similar mounted to a rifle and dropped it, or dropped to the prone position and caught the handle it would snap right off.
So now I get to pay $100 for a broken handguard that isn't worth $50 IMO. I'm going to see if I can get Fobus to warranty it, but even if they do, I wouldn't want the damn thing.
I'm convinced that this handgaurd isn't worth the money and others would be better served with another type of railed handgaurd.
