What other calibers can I shoot with the AR15 platform?
I would like to get something that has more range than 223 for prairie dogs. Do I have to step up to AR10?

Dad kills crows out past 600 yards w/ his Rem 700 223 and I shoot my CR6724 out to 1000 yards, how far are ya planning on shooting?

Mike

ETA - both of us use custom 77grn SMK reloads

I consistantly make 600 yard shots, and had 2 800 yard kills last week, but had to hold VERY high to do it. I would rather have something flatter shooting. It doesnt take much of a breeze to send the 223 off course at that range either.

If you can name it there is probably an AR upper out there for it.

Off the top of my head (this is just the AR-15 platform - there are more for the AR-10)

.50 BMG, .50AE, .50 Beawulf, .50 SOCOM, .499 LW, .458 SOCOM, .30 Whisper, .30 HRT, 7.62x39, 7x45, 7mm Whisper,  7mm PPC, 7mm TCU, 6.8SPC, 6.5 Grendle, 6.5 Whisper, 6.5PPC, 6mm PPC, 6x45, 5.7x28, .25 WSSM, .243WSSM, 5.56/.223, .223 WSSM,  .222 Remington, .222 Remington Magnum, .221 Genghis (aka 5.45x39), .221 Fireball, .204 Ruger, .20 Tactical, .22LR, .17 Remington, .17 Mach II

10mm, .45 ACP, .44Mag, .44 AutoMag, 9mm, .357 Auto, .357 Magnum, 7.62x25

.54 Blackpowder (only one made as far as I know)

Before we get into the AR-10 will one of the above suffice?

Edited to add the 5.7 P-90 round & the WSSM cartridges

Thats pretty good info.
I saw a 223 WSSM shell in the store the other day that looked like it may be what I'm after. The length of the shell looked pretty close to the 223 Rem. so does that mean that someone has a magazine for it that will fit in the AR15 magwell and I could buy an upper for it?
or is there more to it than that?

IIRC Olympic Arms said they were going to produce .223 WSSM's.  You can check with them about what kind of magazine you might need.  They have a forum at www.oa2.org/forums/

I looked at the Oly arms page. It looks like DTech does the same thing.
Has anyone has any experience with these WSSM rounds in an AR15?
Does it make more sense to buy an AR10 and go with the bigger round?

I'm thinkin based on your comments above that an AR10T in either 22-250 IMPROVED or 6.5x08 (commonly referred to as 260 Rem) might be in your future should ya wish to increase your wind-bucking ability at the longer ranges.

Mike

ps - ya did not mention what "weight" bullet your tossing in your current 223/5.56...., have ya tried the 77grn SMKs?

I'm a 6.5mm Grendel fan myself.

The 6.5 Grendle would be another consideration.

Okay, who makes and where can I see and AR-15 in .50 BMG???  That would be something to behold!

ETA: Okay, just did a quick search... nevermind the request.

I have strongly considered a 22-250...I just thought one of the rounds that will fit into my AR15 lower might do the trick. The fact is, the one I had considered if I was to buy an AR10 was the 300SAUM.

The bullet I am shooting right now is Black Hills (blue box) 55 gr V-max.
Do you think a heavier bullet would still make 800 yards? The 55 gr is barely making it out there and holding way over my target.
I just started reloading and would like to try one of the short chamber magnums.

Oly arms makes an upper in 223 wssm, 243 wssm, and 25 wssm.  They're around 620 dollars and they come with a magazine.

The Colt Accurized Rifle that Mr Wilson mentioned has worked for me to 1,106 on Pdogs... isn't that far enough?  75 Hornady A-MAX and VV 540 F205M in WW cases, long loaded for single loading.  Yes they stabalize in my 1 in 9.

Sierra 77grn. MatchKing
24.0 grns. Accurate 2460, (Hot Load), DO NOT PUSH
loaded into once fired (or new) Remington Brass
Remington 7.5 small rifle benchrest primers
These are loaded mag length - 2.250" + or –

In good air (very lite wind) my CR6724 will hold 1/2 MOA (10 shot groups) out to 800 yards, when I do my part. A good 24" stainless-steel 1/9 barrel should do fairly well w/ the 77grn. SMKs as long as your muzzle-velocity is on the "high" end.

Come-ups for 24" Colt Accurized Rifle (6724) w/ Leupold Vari-X III, 4.5x14 w/ turrets and Mil-Dots
100- zero
200-1 1/2 min
300-3 3/4 min
350-4 min
400-5 1/2 min
450-7 1/2 min
500-9 1/4 min
550-11 1/2 min
600-12 3/4 min
700-17 3/4 min
800-23 min
900- no target
1000-35 1/2 min (34-36 depending on humidity)

This may be of some use to ya.

Mike

ps - noticed ya mention hold-over for the second time, we don't "hold-over" we simply use the LFR and "dial" the minutes we need, but then you'll need a precision scope such as the one listed above, preferably mil-dot or the new Premier Rectile Gen II mil-dot.

Thats exactly the info I needed. I will load some this weekend and try them out.
As far as "holdover" goes...I will never say it again, but I didn't really think about adjusting the target turrets at the time. Seems a shame to spend the money on a Black Diamond and not use it like it should be isn't it?

Add .45 GAP to the list. I made a .45 GAP upper receiver using a Thompson Submachine Gun barrel. It uses Sten mags with the lips widened. I used a Delton FT upper receiver and drilled the holes for an Olympic Arms ejector spring assembly. The barrel is getting the indexing pins installed as we speak.

Uses Oly Arms upper system.

Here it is with HGs hung for the photo. I have a DD< FF hanguard ready to go on.

Here's the Thompson barrel with a custom barrel extension.

Tango, That is a SWEET piece. Not really what  I am looking for to take 1000 yard shots at prairie dogs, but I think one of those definitely has a place in my arsenal.

I am taking the other info and building up some loads this morning to try out.

Does anyone have info on the best place to buy WSSM upper...Oly and DTech have been mentioned. If thats the best info then I'll get started with that.
Thanks!

Oooh, oohh, who makes the 10mm upper? I just posted a thread in General (probably wrong place) asking that same question. I would like to eventually have my AR and my Colt 1911 in trhe same caliber.

Shame you're not here in Phoenix. The last two times I went to Rio Salado Gun Club to shoot there was one each time. Just don't shoot next to him, it kinda ruins your concentration and tends to clear loose objects off the surrounding benches!!

At the range that you're talkin about...the 77 grn will be outrunnin that 55 anyway.

Olympic Arms made one in the past (I don't know if they still do - but they are out there ).  Dalphon has (or had) them.

Check the EE there was one there for sale a while back.

I have the .25 WSSM variant upper that Dtech built.  I love it.  I killed my buck this year with it.  email me if you want more details.
