Alright everyone - after 2.5 years on ARFCOM, I've finally ordered my first AR15 (Nov 16th), and it should be in mid-January. RRA Elite CAR A4 Middy.

I've got 500 rnds of LC XM195 on order. Realistically, I'll probably only put 1K-2K rounds downrange per year.

On to the question. I have no cleaning supplies. Nada, zip, zero. When I make the trip to the local gun shop to pick up my new girlfriend, what cleaning supplies do I need to pick up?

I was planning on cleaning rod, patches, bore brush, bore snake?, and some type of degreaser and lube. Its been 10 years since I've broken down/cleaned an AR (.mil), but I think I can muddle through it - just need recommendations on supplies.

Thanks in advance!

Get yourself a good quality cleaning stand.

A gun stand or cradle halps a lot!!!! I have a cradel so I can use it to hold all my guns.
You also need the following:
A dewey coated rod of Tipton Carbon Fiber rod to protect the bore and crown.

Brass jags to fit on the rod and to push the patch down the bore

Good patches

Tooth brush

carbon solvent

copper solvent

bore brushes

91% isopropal alcohol to rince parts clean of solvents.

Q-tips

Rags

a good gun oil like Slip 2000, FP-10, Mil-Comm or Breakfree.

That will get you started!

Thanks guys - I hadn't thought about the gun stand, but that looks like a great idea. Will have to order that with the next paycheck.

And thanks for the rest of the stuff. I'm sure I could have muddled through it - but would probably have made several trips for stuff I'd forgotten.

Many thanks!
