Yes, these have been out for a while now. The 5.7 round was developed by FN I believe. It is fed by a 50 round mag through the top and ejects spent casings out the mag well. You can buy an upper to fit your lower from CheaperThanDirt and other places. Alot of guys like it, it is a hot little round from what I understand. I have never shot one. I thought about getting one for my "multi" lower but then thought, "why would I want to shoot a larger (bullet diameter, at least), slower and more expensive round than the 5.56/.223?"

5.7x28 shoots .224" diameter bullets. Same as .223/5.56x45. |

I reload it, same projo used in 5.56 can be used in a 5.7... I've got an upper. it is a fun range toy, and having 50rds right there is a blast. Cons: it needs a full auto bolt, and it will not fit on all of my lowers (EA, DPMS, RRA are all too tight. fits fine on S&W, Armalite, colt, mega, bushmaster, and AP). |

No, you do not need a tax stamp. I believe he was refering to the rifle needing a FA bolt carrier to function properly.

I got one a couple weeks ago...I need to get some pics.
In all honesty, this is the coolest AR item I have ever bought....and I have had a ton of AR stuff, including 7.5", 10.25" SBRs, .50 Beowolf, etc... It is very high quality. It is basically a mono-lithic receiver/railed handguard system....in 5.56, this thing would cost $1500+. The cartridge is what it is....to me, it's 50 rounds of what I call "Mini-5.56"...... I think it is the coolest, most underated upper out there right now. Ammo is available, due to other ammo increasing in price, this ammo now seems to be very fairly priced. I am very happy with mine thus far. Down side.......once you buy it and play with it enough, you end up buying a $1100 pistol because it shoots the same ammo 
.......and if you look around hard enough, you can end up picking one up for under $650 shipped......I bought mine new through gunbroker for $619 + $15 shipping or something like that. I am now seriously thinking about getting the SBR upper for one of my registered lowers. |

I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Two things I do want to mention. The 30 round mag in my lower is used as a brass catcher. I gutted an old Orlite mag throwing away the spring and follower. Cut off the feed lips and presto, a brass catcher that holds 70 empty casings. Second, it suppresses really well with a 5.56 suppressor. I had my bbl. cut down to 10.5" and 1" milled off the front of the handguard.

HK: It was very easy to remove the barrel because it started life as a 16". Now that the barrel has been cut down and the only part of the bbl. that sticks out past the hand guard is the threads, I don't think I can take it off. We used an old flash hider welded in the end of a socket to torque the bbl. down to the proper specs.

Smokey: The Orlites were the best $5 I ever spent now that they are brass catchers. I did however, think I wasted the money as soon as I tried them in my AR's. Threw them in a box and forgot about them until I got the AR57 upper.

IA71: When I first got it, I put my TA31f ACOG on it to check accuracy. Bench rested it shoots 1 MOA at 100 yards with SS192 ammo. The permanent optic is an Aimpoint T-1 Micro sighted in at 50 yards and the off hand accuracy is still excellent provided I do my part.

I don't know what lowers they do not fit on. I only know they work on the Bushmaster, DPMS, and Olympic Arms lowers that I have.

The same people that make the upper are offering their own mags...at $29.99 each. I got 6 of the first run. They went fast. They are expecting more to be in and ready to ship in the next week or so. They seem every bit as good as the FN mags I had before.....I have tested the ones I have and all work perfect. I didn't like the solid black colored ones though...sold them to a friend......I have some black transparant ones on order to get me to 5 mags.

My AR pistol upgrade.
Sold my 5.56 pistol upper and picked up this AR57 in 11" "Short, Sweet and Simple" -Gutted a Tapco magazine for a brass catcher, because I couldn't bring myself to wreck a PMag. -Lower is my pistol registered DPMS unit. -Front sight is a POF HK style that I had to shorten and drill and tap another mounting screw. Haven't figured out what flash suppressor I'm going to use, but I'm leaning towards a old school 3 prong style. I am keeping it simple with iron sights only. Now to load up some 36gr Varmint Grenades and 45gr Barnes solids!

They are great, so long as you don't plan on using a real suppressor on them ! I had 480 rounds through mine, attached my suppressor to it, and after 75 rounds with the suppressor on it, it froze the ejector and broke the extractor ! I ordered a couple parts kits for the bolt, thinking it was a freak issue, and it repeated this feat 3 more times. This was on a 16in barreled upper. So, moral of the story, they are a well built, awesome gun, so long as you aren't planning to use a suppressor on then, which sucks, because it was extremely quite with it !

That is very strange because I "only" run a suppressor on mine. I cut my barrel down to 10.5" and took 1" off the front of the handguard. I am running an AAC Ranger suppressor in 5.56 and have about 2,500 rounds through it with the suppressor mounted so far. Absolutely ZERO problems.

I'm thinking of using one of these for a pdog gun for 200yds and in. Will this thing be effective and accurate out to there? What about mounting options for scopes? The rail looks a little short on them.
Before anyone asks why, I happen to have a boatload of 5.7 and can't really bring myself to just shoot at targets with it. |

Mine is a fun gun, but one has to realize this is NOT a 223. Think more like a moderized .22 Hornet. I think of mine as a 100yd gun max.
There's room in on the back rail for an optic but if it extends beyonf the rail and over the mag it will make changing mags difficult. I've been able to mount an Aimpoint ML2 on a LaRue mount together with the YHM QDS rear BUIS and that config works well. |

i like the 57 for a short ranger for shooting varmints at night, i did kill a couple hogs with mine the other night. The 50 rounder is great i think and not bulky, ammo is cheap still.
