Just stumbled upon this (sorry if dupe, searched and didn't find anything).
http://cdn.bearingarms.com/uploads/2014/03/russian-spr-close.jpg

Russian soldier in Crimea with AR-15

Interesting stuff.

(Was tempted to post in Mark 12 mod 0 thread, but didn't want to send anyone to the hospital. :)

Edit:
Oops, there is a thread here, but google revealed it, not the site search.
http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=1602304

Sorry for the dupe, although this blog is a bit different.

Didn't they snag a bunch of Bushmasters from Georgia? When they invade Poland again they're gonna get all kinds of US stuff.

My theory is America may be trying to destabilize Ukraine and this just proves my point even further

That AR is likely made in Russia.
Link Posted: 6/18/2014 9:32:40 AM EDT
Molot, a subdivision of Izmash' has been making them for a while. Its a civilian model and the military does not use them...so the photo is most likely a civilian.
Its called the HPE-140 (ANO-140)

Officially those aren't Russian soldiers, they are the Crimean defense forces or whatever. Possibly those guys are just volunteers who suited up in crap they bought of the internet and are using their privately owned Molot HPE-140.

If that's the case, how embarrassing for the Ukrainian GIs that just surrendered to the Bubbas.

The "bubbas" are probably Spetz using civilian weapons for deniability. Black ops style.

Russian made AR, does it belong in the trash?

I SERIOUSLY doubt they were Spetz.

Can't see those guys using anything other than somewhat standardized weapons. Like our SF uses variations of the same thing. Not a whole different platform.

And you count an AR style rifle as evidence of this? When the US supplied and funded the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, did they give them M16's or did they give them AK's?

This is also a tech forum, btw.

This is old news. This stuff was circulating months ago when the guys shows up at the Crimean peninsula. I think it might have even been in ARFCOM.

As someone said above, it's likely that whomever these guys are (cough cough Russian special operators cough cough), that they dress in non-russian clothing and use non-russina firearms to try to thow off those that don't know any better. There was a pretty damning photo that came out of a guy without a mask on. Someone in the "know" or some sharp media person identified him by name as a known Russian officer and provided photos of the same guy a few years ago. It's almost comical except that Ukrainians are losing their life, liberty and property.

group alpha and spetz commonly use ARs, just like every other special operations unit worth a damn around the world. Im definitely not saying that guy is spetznatz, just saying it is not uncommon for eastern block countries and the russians to use the AR in those specialized units

Why would you say that?

Russian Spetsnaz are their elite Special Forces. I am fairly sure our own Special Forces are allowed to use foreign made weapons in the field.

Correct??

Russia's Spetsnaz SFB Group "Alpha" is know for using both indigenous (Russian) and foreign weapons; from American M4s and German MP5s to Austrian Glocks.

Its not uncommon for SF"s to use the weapons of their enemey, mostly so the enemy thinks its their units are firing.
I seriously doubt that is SF, the russan AR is a civilian version and will bet he is a civilian. He maybe a former solder but the russans SF arent going tjeopardize thier life on civilian weapons. Furthermore, the cat is out of the bag that the russans are behind the unrest in the east, no need to make believe.

If you think what's occurring in Ukraine has anything to do with freedom and democracy you are missing the bigger picture. It has everything to do with the pipelines Gazprom runs through Ukraine into Europe. Big petroleum companies have been vying for rights to the natural resources that have been found in Ukraine. This could end up allowing Europe to no longer depend on Russia for its natural resources.

Russia’s state-owned Gazprom, controlling nearly one-fifth of the world’s gas reserves, supplies more than half of Ukraine’s gas annually, and about 30 percent of Europe’s. It has often used this as political and economic leverage over Kiev and Brussels, cutting gas supplies repeatedly over the past decade (in the winters of 2005-2006, 2007-2008, and again in 2008-2009), leading to energy shortages not only in Ukraine, but Western European countries as well. This leverage, however, came under challenge in 2013 as Ukraine took steps towards breaking its dependence on Russian gas.

On November 5, 2013 (just a few weeks before the Maidan demonstrations began in Kiev), Chevron signed a 50-year agreement with the Ukrainian government to develop oil and gas in western Ukraine. According to the New York Times, “The government said that Chevron would spend $350 million on the exploratory phase of the project and that the total investment could reach $10 billion.”

It is probably far less appropriate for the trash than a US made AK.

Spetsnaz are experts at posing as a different unit or group so they can say they were never there. I would not be surprised in the least if these guys were Spetsnaz or a similar unit.

Logical on-topic question, is that a Samson rail? Can't tell if the cuts are squiggly s-shaped things or not. Also wondering if it's 5.56 or 5.45?
