The smaller apperature of the ARMS #40 has a flat top surface, which allows this sight to be slightly lower when folded (possible an issue when you are trying to fit BUIS with an ACOG or Leupold scope ... not an issue with Aimpoints and Eotechs). Additionally the flat spot has a notch to make a nominal 550 meter sight (not that good but better than nothing ....) The ARMS #40a has what looks to be a standard A2 small hole apperature, which gives a better sight picture when using the smaller appearture. Several of the board members have switched the rear sights, thus my recomnedation would be to get the ARMS #40 and if you wish to change later then get a standard sight "L" or one of the custom ones from Brownells or the various board supporters.
