I have a S&W M&P AR-15 and I think it was listed as mil-spec, but not sure

Check company's web site, should have info there.

Some parts, like the bolt and carrier may be built to mil-spec standards, but most S&W parts are not.
So, technically the S&W is not a mil-spec rifle.

If the bolt is marked with magnetic particle inspection marks it's mil-spec.  The mark is typically electo-penciled on the bolt and is usually "MPI".
Same thing for the barrel, only the barrel mark will be stamped and will usually be "C    MP" meaning Chrome lined-Magnetic Particle Inspected.

There's a lot of argument over this, but as far as I know, while other companies may build rifles with some military specification parts and some may use some parts that are more then military specification, only Colt Defense builds rifles that are 100% mil-spec parts.

Are you asking whether the buffer tube is mil spec or commercial diameter?
