I recently moved out of California to Idaho and finaly have an AR that doesnt have a bullet button.  www.ShootingPlanet.com has a pretty good deal on 2000 rounds of Federal XM855 5.56mm but the barrel I have is marked .223 Rem.  Can I shoot 5.56mm in my barrel and what are the pros/cons to 5.56mm over .223 Remington?  Also can anyone tell me if the price on the ammo is a good deal?  They also have 1000 Rounds of Federal AE223 that I know will shoot just fine in my gun but I have never bought bulk ammo before and dont know if it is a good deal or not.

AE223BK is good shooting ammo (for 55 grain) and that price is pretty good.
.223 or 5.56...whatever, it will run fine.

I'm pretty new to AR15s, but it is my understanding that it is not a good idea to shoot 5.56 from a .223 barrel (chamber pressures and case geomety are different between 5.56 and .223 ammo and the .223 chamber may not handle it well). The reverse, shooting .223 ammo from a 5.56 barrel, is okay though.

This is just my understanding, I'm sure some more knowledgeable folks will be right along.

PSA (palmetto state armory) is advertising Genuine M855 62grain Federal Lake City that is NOT MARKED  "Not For Duty Use" at $99 for 300 rounds bulk packed, or $149.99 for 420 rounds packed in a ammo can on 10 round stripper clips.

This is the way that I would go while it's available.  I'd buy the sealed ammo cans for SHTF (I have a some 100 round bandoliers with stripper clip guides left from some IVI (no longer available Canadian military manufacture) NATO SS109).  Reloading magazines from stripper clips with stripper clip guides is much faster than reloading from a bulk box.  For daily practice, I buy some bulk pack because it's significantly less expensive.

This whole .223 vs 5.56 question is moot I think. Ive been collecting and shooting ARs (and an M-16) for 36 years and every AR I've bought will shoot 5.56. I think there were a small amount of rifle (mainly target bolt actions) that fired ".223". To be honest all the ammo I've seen over the years is 5.56. I've never seen any ammo marked .223 only, not 5.56

I have 2 boxes of Remington UMC cartridges in .223 Remington, 55gr. MC, and there isn't a single spot anywhere on the packaging with "5.56" on it. The brass is head stamped with "223 REM" also. Purchased at the local Wal-Mart. See above. There is a difference, and if your gun is marked .223 and not 5.56mm, proceed with prudence and caution.

There is ammo that is boxed in .223,also in 5.56 and in .223/5.56. you should shoot what it says on your barrel, if it says .223 that is what you SHOULD
shoot, but you can shoot .5.56, but do not make a habit  doing so, so just stick with .223.   if it is marked 5.56 you can shoot either one safely, Where
abouts are you in Idaho, glad to see that you could leave a socialist state, thanks.
