Im looking to get an ACOG, and I think Ive settled on the TA31 or TA11. I just cant decide what reticule and color to get.

The chevron, the horseshoe and the crosshair all look good to me, so Im not really sure which to choose.

And Im leaning towards red, but at the same time green looks good as well as the yellow.

Here's a bit of info on my shooting:

I mainly shoot out in the desert. So the backdrop area is usually a tan/gray/green combo.

I normally shoot anywhere from 25-150 yards, but I would like to push that out a little ways once I get a scope.

Can anyone give me some input on the TA31 to help me decide?

Thanks

Is the green bright?

Not to muddy the water, but have you ever tried a 4x32 ACOG firsthand?  Some folks don't particularly like the very short eye relief.

Before you go for the 31 series, you need to try out the 11 series, great ER and IMO, the best ACOG out there....slightly larger, but the extra ER more than makes up for it....all I purchase is the 11 series.

To add:  All of mine have the chevron, the E model, the next one I purcase will be the 11J-G, crosshair and green color

Several folks tried out my 11J [red] at a shoot this past weekend, and the response was unanimously favorable.

Okay, Ill look into the 11. What are some good mounts for it?

I've had both, and would choose a TA31 in any color reticle but red over the TA11. The improved eye relief the TA11 has is nice, but the thing is just huge and IMO I'd rather have the TA31's bigger FOV. It's not like the TA31 has poor eye relief, and we are talking about an AR15..... your head pretty much locks into position behind the rifle so it's not like you are going to be a mile off and have to monkey with your body position.

There a reason both the Army and Marines aren't using the TA11.

Most people I know (myself included) really dislike the TA31. The eye relief is just too short, you have to practically glue your eyebrow to the damn thing in order to see anything. Frankly I hated the various ones I was issued, as well as the TA01, and that hate was unfairly extended to all ACOGs until I checked out the TA33 and TA11. When it comes to all-around "usability", they're miles ahead of the TA31.

I'm torn between green and red, but I'd take the horseshoe over the chevron.

I have a TA11 on my 308 for the eye relief/recoil factor.

If it were a 223 I would go with the TA31.  My preference is red chevron - but that is me.  It will be personal preference, like boxers vs briefs.  Both will have pros and cons and people will spout scientific data on each but in th end, you are the one looking through it.  Try them both out and make your decision.

Well the Marine's SU-258/PVQ SAW Day Optic is a TA11.

What are the good mounts for a TA11?

With the TA31, would I need to mount it all the way to the rear?

LaRue, ADM, Bobro

Most people I worked with had theirs mounted all the way to the rear, YMMV

For all the reasons listed above I find the 11 to be much more to my liking. Larue mount, green donut. Love it. About a month after I got my 11 I sold the 31. Absolutely no regrets.

TA11 or the 33 over the 31 for me. Both have more eye relief and ease had position. The 11 has a great FOV as well, but the 33 is as light as an Aimpoint M4S.

I prefer the red horseshoe reticle - the red color matches my Aimpoints, EOtechs and illuminated reticle scopes. The horeshoe gives precision with the dot and speed with the shoe.

LaRue mount for both.

The military uses the 6x ACOG on 50's sometimes,.... We are talking about rifles, not squad automatic weapons, crew served, or really even DMR guns.

The SDOs are also used on Carbines by some.

The reason the 4x sight was chosen by the military has to do with why the ACOG was originally procured.  It was originally being tested as a SAM rifle sight, it was among many that were to be tested.  However a war broke out and the Marines took what they had at hand with them.  That war's feed back led to the mass fielding of the RCO.

I'd echo this comment, and add that eye relief will forever trump FOV amid any fast-paced venue where one would actually employ Trijicon's well-promoted Bindon Aiming Concept.
