I was wondering how difficult it is to switch upper recievers (removing and alligning the barrel).  Should this be done by a gunsmith?  Is there any cheap high quality stripped flat top uppers?

Super easy with the right tools.  Next to impossible without them.  If you will only do it once I suggest a RRA upper reciever and have it done by a gunsmith.  If you chose a Bushmaster they will install your old barrel on your new upper for free.  Check to see which ends up cheaper and go that route.
