I'm in the market for an AR and am undecided between an A2 or a3 configeration.

I'm wanting the options of using irons and Eotecs. With an A2 the carrying handle and sights are included and i can always attach a rail on top of the carry handle. With the A3 version, I'm going to have to get back up rear and or flip down front sights or a detachable carry handle with front sights. Which version do you all think i should get?

I recently switched to an A3. For optics its easier. I run an EOTech and I couldn't imagine an EOTech on top of a carry handle.

Your choice should really be between an A1 or A3 upper. I personally wouldn't use an A2 upper unless it was for a match rifle.

Either way, you said you want to use an Eotech which in my opinion leaves you no other choice then an A3 upper. Sure, there are ways to mount an Eotech to a fixed carry handle upper but they all suck IMO. If you want to use an Eotech, get an A3 upper. If you want to use an Eotech on an A3 upper and want to switch between it and irons, you will need some type of BUIS.

If you are dead set on using a fixed carry handle upper and an electronic sight, then I would suggest you get either an Aimpoint or a compact ACOG

How did the the Army and Marine Corps manage from the early 80s to jsut a few years ago?

O/P: get the A4 (that's the .mil nomenclature for the flat top receiver).  A3 is an A2 with safe/semi/auto FCG.

Both of my AR's have detachable carrying handles. I have an EOTECH 553 on one and an ACOG on the other. Since you want to use and EOTECH, I would highly recommend the flat top upper.

Alot of flat top uppers come with an A2 front sight. Will this interfere with an EO tec?

This is somewhat oxymoronic, but do they make any DETACHALE a1 handles?

This is good to hear because it was a concern of mine.

If the front sight in your sight picture bothers you, you can buy a riser to fix this.

I believe the A2 upper is obsolete. Detachable carry handle sights are typically only graduated to 600m, but if not being able to shoot for 800m (as the A2 lets you do) bothers you, there are NM sights made for the A4 that will give you the extra range and a lot more precision. Personally, I modify my A4 sights to zero at 200m, and as a consequence my elevation drum will only turn to the 500m position. Although modified, it is accurate to 250 with battlesight zero and accurate at 300m when set at the 300m position, and so on up to 500m.

Get the flattop.  Don't worry about the front sight.  You'll have a better fit with the Eothingy lower on the upper as opposed to the top of the A2 handle.

+1

IMO, now that the A4 is an approved service rifle for competition, there is no reason (other than tradition) to go with the A2.  A lot of HP shooters disagree, but such is the same attitude that dismissed the AR15 when the M14 ruled the line.

A properly tightened carry handle will repeat close enough and is not going to come loose during an 80 round match.

I guess you missed the part were I said personally? I didn't say there is anything wrong with the A2 sight system, I just don't feel it's needed for a defensive carbine. A1 sights with a same plane A2 aperture is the perfect setup for a defensive carbine IMO. Just because the Mil. switched to the A2 does not mean it's the best setup for it's intended purpose.

I'm sure you meant well by that little quip but the term "A3" is the generally accepted term for a flat top upper when referring to AR-15's. Don't believe me, check out the rolemark on a Colt LE6721.

Flat-top with A1 carry handle is pretty ideal.

Buy a flat top (A3) with the carry handle which includes the adjustable rear sight. I have a 20" Armalite that included the carry handle and a 16" RRA that came with their tactical carry handle. Both of these carry handles include the A2 style adjustable rear sights and both guns have the fixed front sights.
I have an EOTech 552, ACOG TA01 and Super Sniper 10X42 all on LaRue mounts that I move between the two guns. The fixed front sights do not interfere with sighting when using any of the optics above.

Enjoy.

While I like the A2, it is mainly for Nostalgic reasons.

For your intended purpose it sounds like a A3/4 upper with a BUIS will work better.

I am building a A2 20", but the next "social" rifle I build will probably be a lightweight 10.5" A1. For that short a rifle I have no need for the elevation drum or adjustable windage (set it and forget it). Any rifle I intend to install optics on gets a flat-top upper. Anything else dosent really make sense unless you have armory/SOP restrictions.
