Besides mottling, is there any other variation in the M16A1 style grip?

Probably early=thin, wide=late.

If it works like people, that how it should be ...did for me anyway

There's a little variation in grip width amongst the common mottled grips.  wide / thin etc.  The early 601 green / brown grips are noticeably thinner in girth.

Didn't know that. Now to figure out which one was early and which one was late.

I use the late ones on my highpower guns since I don't like the A2 bumped ones in the offhand hold.

Speaking of which, anyone got any of the really wide girth ones for sale?

i think there were also checkering differences.  some with the checkering raised and some recessed if i recall.

Some have a "C"  molded up inside, some do not, some have a "wagon wheel" circle with crossed lines molded in too.

The black thin ones are the same size as the 601 grips.

The area around the sling swivel hole is also the same shape on the black thin and the 601 grips I have.  Compare this area with the thick black grip on the far right. And yes I was very bored today :-).

Glad you posted that! I have noticed a difference in the sling swivel holes in the two A1 grips that I have. One of them being the (I presume) early mottled one on my retro clone, and the other being the (I presume) later matte one.

This is what I was looking for. Thank you.
The last grip (uttermost right) look at the bottom. It has a scallop. I like that version.

You'll also notice that on some, the checkering is raised, where on others it's 'engraved' if that makes sense. I believe grips with raised checkering are later versions, but it could be just different suppliers - not really sure.

Pictures are worth a thousand words.  I've never noticed that - thanks Peepshowal.

I measured some.  A green 601 is about 1.14 at the widest or thickest point.  The fatter black ones, which I have the most of are about 1.23 at the widest (varies a little).
