can you put a 20" A1 front sight on a 20" A2 barell? is the OD of both barells the same where the sight base pins to the barell?

Nope.  You will have to re-profile the entire front end of the barrel in order to even get the .625 (A1) front sight base to fit.

Adco Firearms will profile around the legs of a standard A2 front sight base to make it look like an A1 though.

Have it re profiled by Adco.  Either they can profile it and re-use the original A2 base, making it look like an A1.  Or they can profile the barrel and attach an A1 base you provide.

I'm thinking about doing one of those for my retro clone so I can have an A1 1:7 twist barrel.
