Perhaps an obvious question; given the popularity of the 9mm caliber why isn't there a dedicated lower/upper set in the AR config? Or at least a lower that wouldn't require mag well modifications. Likely a matter of cost to produce but is there any other reason?

it would have undermined the modularity of the AR.....if you ask me the AR is probably the most universal lower you can buy....22 lr 762x39 223 222 etc...all by changing uppers and a few parts.. pretty good in my book....there not another assault type of weapon on the books that has this type of flexibility...

Well, I guess you can say that the "AR" has evolved into that. To my understanding, the AR was suppose to be 223 (5.56) and that was it..... The ability to remove the upper was suppose to be for the ease of cleaning(???). I could be wrong (odds are)....
