I know there is a heavier buffer for 9mm carbines. but is the buffer spring the same standard 5.56mm spring?

The carbine buffer spring is the same, 9mm or 5.56mm.  However, some springs are wound with the coils a slightly smaller diameter than is needed for the 9mm buffer.  If the spring won't slip onto the buffer, with both out of the AR, you'll need a spring with larger diameter coils.

The DPMS buffer springs will work with the 9mm buffer.  There are others, but I don't know which ones.
