Does anyone have any info on 7” vs. 10.5” velocity?

I have been humming and hawing the idea of an AR pistol build or purchase for a while and I’ve pretty much decided to do it.  I think I will be using my tax return for one.

Terminal performance is a consideration in case it is ever used defensively.  I don’t even know if either barrel will have “good” performance but I’d like to get a handle on the differences.

Thanks guys.

ETA: I am talking about 223/5.56 in case that didn't go without saying.

ETA: My current understanding is that 55 grain should be going about 2200 fps from a 7" and about 2700 fps from a 10.5" but I don't have much to go off of.  Just "what I've heard".

You will likely get no fragmentation from either barrel, just a nice clean .22" hole.  You will have to consider some type of expanding round if you want to use it for defense.

More reliable? 10.5. More powerful? 10.5, and by a significant margin. More fun? 7.5 of course!

Decide accordingly.

Wait a second, are you saying a 7.5" barrel with be more powerful?  Like, more energy?

OK, that makes sense.    I thought I was going crazy or really didn't understand what the fuck was going on.

I think some lose sight of the fact that these are just for fun guns and not designed or intended for personal protection.

Heaven knows we have 1911's, .357's, .44's and a host of others that are better suited for that purpose.

Now, having said the above. There's absolutely no doubt that, at 50yds or less, I could place three rounds center mass and the target would not be in a position to do harm.

BTW. I had a ball yesterday tearing up a bunch of paper plates with my Bushy 97S pistol.

I would love it for fun but I can't help thinking it would be viable as a self-defense weapon.  Maybe I just don't understand the numbers well enough.

ETA: I mean the XM177 was 10", wasn't it?  I realize full auto is different but still...same velocity.

I found this on the Kel-Tec PLR-16 website.
It for the 5.56 M193 Ball, from their 9.2" PLR16 Barrel @ 2600fps
It may be of some use.

1NAVYCHIEF-RET and DDofWA, thank you both very much.

Those are great references!

IAMLEGEND,  You may want to save the jpg that Kel-Tec has on their site, just in case they change or delete it.  It is a very good piece of reference material.

With some good Winchester PSPs  or HPs "if meat preservation is not an issue"--(saw that on a box of ammo once) it ought to work just fine.  Either barrel will have more energy inside a home than a 20" at 300 yds and our boys in the sandbox are using them with great effectiveness.
