I can't find but a few companies that offer these. What's your experience and where do I get them?
Link Posted: 2/23/2006 4:34:16 PM EDT
You want a complete upper? DPMS & Model 1 sells them new. Colt made them ... search gunbroker for used Colts ...
Link Posted: 2/23/2006 4:58:12 PM EDT
I may be showing some prejudice here, but there is probably a good reason they aren't readily available.

Part of probably has to do with why would any one want one?

Technically speaking in reference to wound characterisitics the 5.56x45 round makes bigger holes then the 7.62x39 round. But if you are talking about shooting at paper then yes you are right.

True ... for the most part the entrance and exit wound of the 7.62x39 on a human is generally the same ... 7.62MM ...

Mags are NOT readily available ... but are available ... just have to look a little harder. I have found the 20 Round USA Frankenmags to be the best. Some other companies make them and Creative Products just announced they are coming to market with a 25 Round 7.62x39 Stainless magazine .... we'll just have to wait and see how it performs. The 7.62x39 round DOES NOT feed well in standard straight AR-15 magazines. That is why AK-47 mags are sharply curved and why FrankMags tend to work the best ...

I was thinking about suppressing it. I think I can download 7.62 to subsonic pretty easy. Plus it would be cheap to shot regular ammo.

The Magazine guy is at all the Eastman shows in GA if you need to pick up some magazines ....

This is a Model 1 upper. (Shorty) Works great, never have any problems with it. Throws a great ball of flash, and mags are no problem. I watched the EE here and bought a bunch of mags, USA and GTech. Even bought a couple ChiCom drums.

Are they fun? I think so.

Good eye. That sounds good. I'll give you a call and see what your take is on my idea. If I have to I can build an upper I suppose. Probably just as easy with a little qualified expertise (hint, hint).

you can get the MGI modular lower and use normal AK mags

I don't want to join or create a TFH or pissing contest but I have been considering swapping my carbine over to this cartridge ever since I had a ferrel hog absorb over a dozen close range hits .223 before he went down at my feet. it is not just the size of the holes but the penetration through heavy hide and thick bone that I am most concerned with. If I was "hunting" for a hog I could use a better bullet placement (as well as a better rifle more suited to the activity), but for the incident I mentioned above all I was hiking not hunting and all I could take were head shots since he was charging my arse.

The biggest arguments I've heard against the 7.62x39 are accuracy and magazine issues.

I am suspecting that the lower accuracy of the AK/SKS compared to the AR are as much to blame on crappy commie manufacturing as the inherrent ballistics. Is that a fair statement? Also is the lower accuracy manifested at ranges of 80yds and less?

As far as magazines go I am thinking that a 20rd version might have fewer feeding issues than a 30. Are there certain manufacurers of mags that seem to have beeter results?

ETA: I considered using other chambers that might mitigate these two drawbacks but anything else I've looked at will cost more to go plinking with than the 5.56.

I want one and I want it chrome-lined. C Products is coming out with a 7.62x39 mag that they swear will work. I surely hope so...

Good luck, Bubba.

Even the Colt made pieces weren't chromed, and to my knowledge no one has yet brought out a chromed 7.62x39 barrel.

But then, my knowledge is not all encompassing

go to this site buy the lower have them modify your upper for use with ak mags then you have a ar-47 rifle that takes cheap ak mags and drums.

It's amazing. For all the people that say they want one, I've gotten but 1 bite on my 7.62x39 parts FS on EE and the guy wanted to trade me for half the value of my parts. Is it me? Do I stink? Is my fly open?

I used the 20 round franken mags only because the 30 rounders are quite long compared to a 30 round 5.56 mag, and I didn't like the mag hanging so low on the gun.

Combine with MGI QCB upper, just swap to 7.62x39 barrel and bolt.

THere was a rumor not longa go that KAC was supposed to be building a bunch of them for the military.. I dont know if it was upppers or compete rifles.
Link Posted: 3/21/2006 9:10:27 AM EDT
They built like 4 if I remember correctly and it was a complete firearm as they had to have an angled cut on the lower to fit a ak mag

Here's what I posted about this rifle (which someone over there called a "Cave Gun") over in the "Magazine" area:

"Now I recall what you are referring to. It was a real morphodite operation, manufactured by Knight if I recall! Started out to be just a replacement lower for the AR that would take "battle-field pickup" AK mags. The idea was to maintain the AR features and functions to the greatest extent possible as well as a very high degree of parts commonality. By the time they were finished, it was just about a whole new weapon...both upper & lower were totally new...a 1/4" longer to accomodate the tip-in AK mag vs. push-in AR mag, requiring a whole new bolt carrier to go with the longer receivers.

As you pointed out, the only thing the weapon had going for it was that it was an AR...controls, ergonomics, accuracy, etc. And all for the tidy little sum of about $2200 a copy! Somehow, the idea of keeping maximum parts commonality flew out the window!

I actually saw a specimen copy at USASFC in late 2002. Really seems like a great idea that just ran amuck! Now, as for Larry's mag concept...now that holds some promise!"

The magazine I was referring to is the 7.62X39 AR mag that CProducts is in the final stages of developing.

Added later: I have a Model 1 Sales 7.62X39 AR with about 250-300 rds through it. It's a definite keeper - Damned accurate for a firearm in that caliber! I think anyone looking for a 'X39" AR should give Model 1 a good hard look.

This is why I'm inquiring about uppers. If .mil is going to have them, they will be chrome lined, so someone will be making one, probably soon...

TS,
I have been very pleased with the folks at Model 1 Sales all the way around. Good folks, easy to deal with offering excellent service with a fine product at a great price. What's not to love?!?! I basically told them what I wanted (16" bbl, M-4 hand guards, etc.) and they put it together for me and had it to my door in about a week. The upper was complete with everything, assembled & headspaced, ready to go. For the lower, all that was missing was the actual receiver - I used a RRA job that I had purchased locally. For a 7.62X39, she's dead-nuts accurate.

Let's just say that I'm pretty pleased!

When you post a pic of the muzzle end of the barrel, and the rear of the chamber end, so I can see the overflashing of the plating, I'll believe you. Till then, sorry; either you think you have chrome lining and are mistaken, or you're BSing

I prefer to believe the former
