Hello all,
It's time to start on a new project, and I think I want to build another AR. But this time, I'm kind of leaning towards one that is chambered in 7.62x39. I found a place in Shotgun News called Tactical Weapons, and they claim to have a lower receiver that uses AK mags and drums. Have any of you tried this kind of setup yet? It sounds to good to be true, if you ask me. But in the event it is true, can you all imagine the $$$$$$$$$$$$ we will be saving, shooting the inexpensive AK round.

It sounds all good, but you'd have to modify the bolt and the upper to accept the 7.62x39 lower that takes AK mags. I'd suggest a regular upper, you can still find reliable frankenmags, but for a price. Considering the AWB is about to sunset, I'd get the regular setup and wait for the hi-caps to become available again. In my opinion, with the price they're asking for even the lower, I don't think it's worth it.

Honestly the round sucks- I was a diehard Ak guy for a long time. Touted the little 7.62x39 round as the .308 for under 300 yards- yah right. Read up on it and you will see what I mean. It drops 80 inches and goes nearly subsonic at just over 500 yards. I like it because it doesn't break apart on impact and it weighs 123 grains. However you can buy Russian .223 that has the Copper coated steel casing on the bullet that won't break apart neither for shooting through car doors, light cover etc. I have always thought if they could somehow make a 100 grain .30 caliber bullet for 7.62x39 it would be alot better for long range.

Not to discourage you, But if you want to shoot 7.62x39, go buy an Romanian SAR-1 (AK-47 type). It'll be LIGHTYEARS more reliable than an AR conversion, and it'll only cost a fraction. Plus you'll have a whole new gun to sport. Finially, they've stopped importing them, so they might go up in value.
