I heard about these a few years ago. Read somewhere that the M948 version was phased out due to the sabot causing muzzle brake failures: M-14-type (longer) or AR ones (shorter)? Will these penetrate current issue body armor, like Level III or IV? Just curious 'cause a .mil guy I had as a patient the other night was into guns and he said they aren't too common but definitely wouldn't want any quantity to fall into Hadji's hands.

What kind of range are these things good out to?

They will penetrate BA but the accuracy usually sucks past 100-200m or so. That is the problem with nearly all slap ammo.

30 cal AP would be a much better choice

Real SLAP will penetrate about anything you would be able to wear and still attempt to walk.

Here is a pic of a real one. They are damn hard to find, I got some for my ammo collection several years ago and have not seen any since. The one's I bought were all loaded on M14 stripper clips but were likely delinked at some time. .30 AP won't come close to what these will go thru and most GI armor plate are rated for .30 AP.

Luv the SLAP, posted this pic before but still needs posting.  This round is what got me started into cutting.  M948 SLAP is said to have a non ferrous tungsten carbide penetrator in a plastic sabot with an aluminum pusher at the base.  Althouth  I've found it to be just slightly magnetic.  They were made at the Furenede Fabriksverk (FFV), Karlsborg, Sweden for Winchester with a 62 gr projectile.  It should measure .191" or 4.86mm.  There is also a Slap T- tracer that has a M196 instead of the tunsten.
The tungsten core has a Vickers Hardness of Hv 1450, it will penetrate Type 5 Body Armor (classified), Mil -A - 12560 Ballistic + Armour steel (classified), and level 5 Ballistic Fiberglass at 1 7/16 thick.  It was rumored that they where replaced with the M993 because the sabot was having seperation problems with muzzle breaks, except in was just reported another 5million(?) or something was just reorder in the .50cal, M903 SLAP.
The sabot seperates from 10 to 50 yards causing the projectile to travel over 4000 fps, giving better penetration at around 250 meters.  Accuracy was not that great due to this seperation.  They used the M13 metalic links, but pulled apart for indivdual use.
They are still floating around, but expect to pay about $20- each!    wolf

So a weapon with a "long" FH like an M-14 is a no-go with these due to the sleeve seperation?

Are they "minute of bad guy" out to 200m or so?

A good friend of mine who is a certified trainer on the GE134 minigun said that 7.62 SLAP is usually used in miniguns nowadays. It's great shit in that kinda volume.

I have heard that also.

Three questions:

1) Will they reliably cycle a semi-auto weapon?

2) Can you hit CoM at 200m?

3) How does the POI differ from a weapon zeroed for 7.62 Ball?

Everything previously said indicates that it will cycle semi-auto rifles, but tends to have issues with sabot seperation when the rifle has any kind of muzzle device. Also, since I have no personel experience with 7.62 SLAP I can't answer the second and third questions.

My buddy has some he bought at a gunshow some time ago. It cycled his FAL and went thru 1/2 steel like it wasn't even there. POI appeared to be right where he aimed it, plate was at 75 yards so don't know about long range accuracy. We have a new plate that's 1 3/4 thick, we're gonna give that one a try next time.
