I've been looking for authentic .mil pics of such a beast. Does anyone have any or know where some might be? Thanks.

1/2 way down the page on the right side is an Airman with one. I have personally seen them also.

If I'm looking at the same pic, that's a partial fence lower. I guess I should specify: any non-Air Force rebuild pics?

This is the one I found and built my 723 after. It has the A1 lower but I want to replace it with a gray Nodak A2 lower but im not sure I will ever find one. This is also the one I keep in my truck but with a few up dates.

My truck gun went from this

To this

I know the buffer nut and plate are not right but I couldn't find my tools to put on the right one on at that time.

I guess I didn't read the OP post about the lower good enough. Your above is close to what I am building. Mine has an A1 upper/lower and an Aimpoint 1000. I will post pics after my Dennys A2 extended is perm attached.

I've seen yours, and it is the inspiration for mine. Looks great. Now I just need the barrel, Surefire, and Aimpoint. I've just never seen an actual pic of one in USGI use.

The other question is which upper to use? I've got an absolutely mint, dark grey D K upper and a used, black C K that I'll need to send off to U.S. Anodizing.

I thought 723's were lightweight barrels, and 727's were M4 barrels?

723's used ltwt barrels, but apparently some had m4 barrels. The 727 is an A2 upper with M4 barrel.

Thanks Morg, like always, it seems everything was disassembled once in a while, tossed around in a room with all the other parts, and then reassembled with whatever was within reach.

From everything I've seen and read, Colt seems to have a penchant for using up whatever parts are on hand at the time and calling them the same thing. Witness all the A1 lowers that are marked M16A2. If you look at Ekie's carbine guide it shows two possibilities of 723's - I trust Ekie's info the most at this point I guess. I've also seen brand new C7 receiver, M4 barrel uppers for sale on Gunbroker, and have heard from others that they existed as well. It wasn't just the AF that built franken carbines I guess! I just bought an M4 marked A2 upper reciever, which tells me that some 727's really were M4's as Dockery says. Otherwise, why would Colt mark them that way? It certainly makes for a lively debate.

Now this one definitely took a turn for the better!

I started another thread because I couldn't find this one, but here's a pic of an IDF carbine per the OP's request.

I blew the pic up and it definitely looks like an A1 upper.

I'm thinking C7

eta: you can definitely see the bump, rear sight is tough to tell even when blown up.

I concur. My 727 replica:
