I decided what the hell. I might as well build a dedicated 6.8 SPC target rifle to show its true capabilities.
Testing will begin in the next few weeks as the weather here is breaking.
22in 1:10 XXX 3R Triad barrel
NIB Super Bolt
Young Manufacturing N/M carrier
Mega forged upper
Diamondhead rail
BCM Mod 4 CH
Tactical Machine 6.8 SPC lower
PSA MOE lower parts kit
Giessele SD-C trigger
Magpul ACS stock
Wolff 16503 Std Spring
PSA Standard Buffer
Vortex Viper 6x24
Burris mount

Now to find which of the Berger or Cutting Edge bullets it likes the best.

I have 6.8 and a 6.5 both are great guns. will be very interested to see the legs get stretched on a 6.8

Nice rig. One of my 16" 6.8's is a Rock River with the same twist. Although not a target bullet the Barnes 95 TTSX's over 29.5 of LT-32 at 2.750 OAL is ultra accurate out of it. Be interested one you get rocking as to what loads you develop.

Sub..........scribed. I have had the same thought.

Must give us all the bad stuff also. No cherry picking.

Does Hornady or even Sierra make a slightly less expensive bullet with reasonable BC? I would love to shoot Bergers, but dang, they're pretty pricey. However, I'm not shooting matches, either. Looking forward to the results at 100 and at distance.

I have just gotten a 135 SMK up to 2497 out of a 16in.
Its another one I will work up in this rifle.

Nice build.

Good deal. I have a Triad inbound and looking forward to it as well.

My 20 inch xxx shoots noslers 115 target bullet great at 2700 fps with 2200. I do need a heavier higher BC slug to fend off Wyoming wind.

Watching this thread!

Any chance to see 140gs at work here?

You'll probably will have to go longer than Mag length on the COAL.

[No linking to there - F]

Sweet looking build!

140's will be included.
I will be loading to two lengths initially. Where I can due to projectile length.
2.31 OAL for those that want to shoot mag length.
2.36 OAL for those such as myself that see nothing wrong with using a windowed mag that holds 12 long and more 13 at 2.31.
I may then modify the lower to load 2.41 but only if I deem it necessary to get the projectiles closer to the lands to hold .5 MOA.

First on deck are the following:
130 Berger VLD
140 Berger VLD
130 Berger Classic Hunter
120 Cutting Edge MTH
123 Cutting Edge MTAC (my request to build these)
130 Cutting Edge MTH
133 Cutting Edge MTAC (my request to build these)
125 Cutting Edge MTAC (my request to build these)
135 Sierra SMK
129 Berger LRX This ones a no go. To long and needs 1:9 twist

I will consider any other suggestions as well.

Thanks for the compliments on the build gents :)

First results are in.

Just in the load work up phase.
Only one day nice enough to set up crono so far without wind knocking it over.

I am seeing results from 100 fps to 250 fps increase in speed over my 16in Bison barrel.
My 90gr Gold Dots that I run 2850fps in my 16in (I can push them faster but its very accurate) go 3100 fps from the 3R Triad 22in.

Here is the shocker.
130gr Berger Classic Hunter @ 2.36 OAL over 34.4 grains of LEVER @ 2830 fps .6 MOA
130gr Berger VLD @ 2.36 over 34.4 grains of LEVER @ 2850 fps .6 MOA
This was only initial load ladder results and there are no pressure signs at all.
Primers are rounded, no craters, case head expansion max at .4205, brass looks perfect.

I ran a 2 shot load with the 140 VLD over 34 grains of LEVER at 2680 fps, will try 34.2 and 34.4 next time to see what the final is. I suspect I'm getting close to what these will run
No pressure signs here either.

I will be reporting both mag length at 2.31 and 2.36 OAL's as it progresses.

More to come.......

Nice rifle. What mag are you modifying?

Sounds great Yama. Getting some mac daddy long legs there. I'm officially out of the 6.8 game as of today. Damn taxes and having to borrow money and sell everything. I had to buy one rifle in 5.56 and one AK for my son, I owed him, and I owed him $1200 as well from last year's taxes I had been paying off. He and I are even now.

I hope that in about 8 months to a year, I will be calling up the G+1 at < Seriously? - F > and starting a new build. I miss it already, and miss being part of the 6.8 Clan.

Thanks for the work you're doing on this stuff. I may go with a 20" next go around since I have a really short Tavor now. The short and sweet is out of the way.

I have modified ACS and CPD mags and they work flawlessly.
Either 5 rounds or 10 depending got the depth of the window so far.
You can go up to 12 rounds and still be in the mag well.
Guys report PRI words very well to.
At the "other place" there is getting to be a number of folks following this path.
I am not the only one pushing 130gr high BC projectiles to these speeds.
This aint your grandmas 6.8 lol :)

As I posted earlier I will also run some at 2.31 for those that want to use ASC mags unmodified.
They load to 2.316 advertised.

And thank you :)

130gr Berger Classic Hunter @ 2.36 OAL over 34.4 grains of LEVER @ 2830 fps .6 MOA

Note energy levels at muzzle and 100 yards, this is at SEA
These are real results, supersonic to 1000 yards, full stability
This is better than I expected

Fantastic thread on a caliber I'm looking to acquire in this platform....thanks for posting. The handload data is especially helpful; specifically the list of pills you have access to for load development. I consider myself to be too inept to build a rifle like yours, but something like that is what I'm aspiring to!

Thanks!
I will have more data after Monday.
Going to add the 130 SST to the list as well.

This puts the 6.8 directly between the 6.5 Lapua and 6.5 Creedmoor in actual performance. This is the only 6.8 barrel I would consider, even so I am unwilling to push 6.8 this hard.

Yes, I want performance such as this from an AR. Yes, I acknowledge that proper chanber design and modern powders tailored to particular barrels with distictive rifling will work wonders. I guess I need be nudged from modest expections from an intermediate caliber?
