Why are there more right then left handguards??  Are the left more prone to breakage?
Link Posted: 7/27/2009 1:28:05 PM EDT
[#9]
Sounds like the competition for right original handguards is about to go up.

I've heard a lot of speculation about why.
Best I heard was when a righty drops to the ground the left side takes the beating.
When you crawl on your belly it takes even more beating.

Who knows the real reason why.

Why the right? Everyone posting here is looking for left sides, besides the ones needing both sides.

ETA: Anybody ever seen a case of left side HGs (black not green ones) for sale?

ETA again: The brown one in the auction looks kinda weird, like it maggots crawling around on it.

Akkk. I meant left.

If I could just find a case of lefts I could clean up around here.

I'd actually sell them for what I paid...but only to the regulars around here.

I don't know for sure, but I have an idea.  In the Air Force, when we shoot, we frequently have to lay the rifles down on their left side on the concrete (to show the bolt is open with the chamber empty).  I can see the rough concrete wearing on the protruding rear area of the left handguard.

Just a guess  ???

If you want to bid those up and get them,  I'll give you 5 bucks for the brown maggoty one.

Hmmm...I lay my rifles down on their left side, but I don't frickin' slam 'em down.  Didn't even do that when I was 19 and on active duty...'course, there weren't no wars on back then either...

I guess I should have been more clear... I didn't mean we slam them down and bust the handguard.  I meant the abrasive nature of the concrete wears on them over a period of time.

I apologize for any confusion.

John, I didn't mean to imply you did.  My comment was tongue-in-cheek, or meant to be.

Wow, that's an awful lot for a non-matched pair.
Hopefully the winner has 2 lefts and can make a couple of pair.
That's the only reason why I would have spent that much.
TThat's getting pretty close to what I paid for my matched pair.
The pistol grips would be nice bonuses.

Fuck all of you! I've been looking for a left side forever

Just kidding, but seriously I'm still looking for a left side..been looking for one since I built my 601 like 2 years ago.

Remember that the last matching pair went for $1056 on GB.
Link Posted: 8/2/2009 6:17:43 PM EDT
[#33]
Actually I bought my pair off of GB after the $1025 pair.
I only paid $755.
I was bidding against people who had bid in the $1025 auction.
I kinda figured what their highest bid was and was hoping to get them for under $850.(which was what my maximum bid was going to be)

I wouldn't have paid more than $200 for a mismatched pair.

To put this in perspective, I bought a matching pair  off the "Chestnut Ridge" website probably in 2002 listed under "odds and ends" for $85.  Chestnut Ridge sells stains for stocks for M1s and M14s.

...and I remember taking them off guns brand new and throwing them in big piles to be disposed of. We didn't care about those cuz we were all trying to build our M4geries.

That's just mean, you made Mark cry! Now go apologize to him, by sending him a set of those HGs you did not throw away.

Just the thought of that makes me sick.

Here's one that will make all gun collectors cry.Guy I knew years ago went to a US govt surplus auction with the intentions of bidding to win SEVERAL thousand M1 carbine stocks, including many M1A1 para stocks... With the auction IN PROGRESS bidders saw soldiers pour gas on a pile of wood and light it up..Yep,ALL those stocks were suddenly deemed "weapon related" and not available for sale..Gods honest truth,,and he had pictures of the blaze...
