This week I got to play with a PS90 for the first time.  There was a chrono available and we shot 2 loads.  The 40 grain Vmax averaged right at 2000 FPS out of the 16in barrel.  The 40 hollow point(white box) averaged 2600 fps.  Is this common?  600fps difference just seems way too much for same bullet weight.

Thanks

Not necasarily common but the Vmax and hollow points are 2 different bullet styles. The hollow point is probably designed to violently fragment as the vmax would likely stay more intact with just light fragmentation .

I'm no expert on the 5.7 but when you use such a small case the bullet length, and the resulting case capacity used up by deeper seating of the bullet, can make a big difference.  The V-Max has a poly tip, which will increase the length of the bullet and on such a small bullet may be fairly significant.  600fps still seems like a lot of difference though.  If you post your question on fivesevenforums.com I'm sure someone there could give you a good explenation.

I just looked up some info about Elite Ammunition.  They specialize in 5.7 ammo and load the 40gr V-Max in their Protector ammo.  The only velocity they had listed was for the FiveseveN pistol but in that short barrel it was going 2092fps.  In most of the ammo I could find info on with velocities for both the pistol and the rifle the rifle had it going about 600fps faster.  So maybe you just had some really low power ammo...

Where did you get 40gr hollow points?
The SS195LF is a 27gr bullet, that's usually what comes in the white boxes.

I was shooting another guy's gun.  He said that they were 40 gr hollow points.  If they were 27 grain bullets, that would explain the velocity difference.

Ah, I was wondering if they were reloads or if you had somebody's factory 40gr hollow points (like the Elite ammo stuff).
If they were straight out of the FN white box they were probably the 27gr bullets.

I do remember the box having a sticker that said "SS19something" so they probably were the 27 grainers.  Thanks for the help.

I used to own a PS-90, and I personally think the best ammo for it was the SS195. The problem is finding it. You will be able to find SS197 all the time, but finding the SS195 or the SS192`s is a lot harder.

SS197, the 40gr V-Max load, is well known to be underloaded. They could have squeezed a lot more out of the round. No idea why they didn't.

Beware!! Even the new SS195 is dumbed down. FN seems like they are trying to kill this platform with how they keep putting out more and more anemic ammo.
