I'm trying to figure out the difference between 5.56 and .223. Is there a significant difference in the chambering? Should one ammo be avoided in the other's chamber? I see on Bushmaster's website where the barrel is chambered for .223 Remingtion, but the velocities given are based on NATO ammo. What gives?

Thanks in advance.

The "safe" answer is, you can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56 chamber, but vice-versa is not advisable.

5.56 chamber has a little more expansion room in the shoulder and neck, and more leade, the unrifled part of the barrel in front of the chamber, to allow for the higher pressure of mil ammo.
Wisdom says a 5.56 round in a .223 chamber is a potential recipe for a KaBoom.

RangerX_Varminter-

Kinda of subject but... are you a Ranger?

also i have heard the same thing, you can shoot .223 out of a 5.56, but not the other way around. I talks about it in depth in the front of every bushmaster catalouge.

There are some differences, but I'm sure you'll agree that...

BOTH SHOULD BE BANNED!

Once, many moons ago....

It's kinda like the old jarhead saying, "Once a Marine, Always a Marine"

It's just his motto. He thinks everything should be banned.
You'll get used to it. He's actually pretty funny.

Yup. There are enough things that can go wrong that someone might try to blame on a manufacturer that they don't say anything about, so I would suspect that a class outfit like Bushmaster has good reason for going out of their way to do so.

I'm glad you do! I think you are the only one that does.

I think most folks on an AR-15 discussion board can understand when the word ban gets me a little twitchy.

Or so the Germans would have us believe......

Just a little confusion from a newbie. My 6290 has 5.56 stamped on the lower. I assume this means I can shoot both .223 and 5.56 nato? So Colt is a little different than Bushmaster?

I think what really matters is what's stamped on the barrel.

Aslan why do you think bushmaster is different from colt?? bushmaster is marked 5.56 too ON the barrel.
