My brother’s job has him transferring back to the States after 6 years in Australia. I took him to the range over the weekend to let him feel the love of the AR’s that he has been missing. I took both the 5.56 and the 6.8spc, he had never shot a 6.8, and he is in love. He wants to order a Rock River AR in 6.8 as soon as possible. I told him he should get one in 5.56 first, mainly due to the cost of ammo. I told him he could use mine all he wanted and just get a 6.8 upper later. I still think he is set on the 6.8 thou.

So what is your take? Would you get a 6.8 or the 5.56 first? I know it would be a year or two before he could afford another AR. Should I just keep my pie hole closed and let him enjoy his returned freedom?

You had to know that was coming.  I've got both.

Honestly - if I didnt have a 5.56 SBR/can setup already, I'd build the same gun in 6.8.  Thats my next project.

Hey its his money. If he wants a 6.8. Go for it. Its a free country till Hillery gets in.

If he doesn't reload, get 5.56
If he does reload, get 6.8.
I like both.  The 5.56 is cheeper all around, but for the reloader, the 6.8 is not all that bad.    Less then the 308 or 30-06
(but wait........ I like them too.......)

My 2 cents worth

If he plans on smokin' poodles and squirrels go with the 5.56. For Zombies and real bad guys get the 6.8mm SPC.

6.8mm SPC has twice the energy of a 5.56mm with a flatter trajectory than a 7.62mm. What's not to like? Seems to be the perfect do-everything cartridge for the AR15 platform.

All four of my AR's have had sex changes from 5.56mm girls to 6.8mm boys...

My 2 cents.

I agree everyone should have a 6.8, hell I wish I had a couple more. I just hope he does not get the 6.8 and then regret it because of the cost of ammo. He has never really been interested in reloading. I gave him my old reloading setup for 45acp a year or two before he left for Aussy and it never made it out of the box. I think it is still in a box in my attic.

If he goes 6.8 first I will probably let one of my 5.56's set in his safe, but which one? I love them all.

I have lost interest in 5.56 after I built and shot my first 6.8. My Armalite is going to be rebarreled next.

"I took both the 5.56 and the 6.8spc..."

Which 6.8 (brand) rifle/upper do you have?

If your brother gets one, tell him to get a 1-10 or 1-11 twist.

I have a MSTN upper mounted on a RRA lower. I plan on ordering another in the fall. I might go with a Ko-tonics.
