It an older pre ban so it is .223 not .223/5.56..

Bad idea. You can shoot .223 in a 5.56 nato chamber, but not vice versa. A .223 chamber is quite a bit tighter. If you want to shoot 5.56, don't chance it and get a mil-spec barreled upper to slap on your lower.

I have shot 5.56 NATO ammo in my three Oly barrels for many years, without mishap, no pressure signs on the brass either.

The main "problem" was that NATO ammo was loaded to higher than SAAMI pressures.  This could be a problem in some non-military type rifles made for SAAMI ammo.

BUT, the main difference between the 5.56 and .223 chambers are the throat, or leade, being longer in the 5.56.  As long as you are not going to use the long bullets, or ones that have an ogive that engages the rifling when it is chambered, you are not going to have a problem shooting 5.56 ammo in a .223 chambered AR15.

And my actual experience, shooting these rifles, yes, including Olys, for more than 15 years bears this out.
