Sir, thank you for posting that link. I noticed that on the front cover, a tear drop forward assist is depicted. This was of particular interest to me, as I acquired the upper shown below which I found to have a tear drop FA, Colt proof marks on the upper as with A1s (which I have never seen on any other A2 upper). It is an upper assembly exactly as illustrated in your manual.

And it shoots great - first three rounds downrange:

Nice articles.
Edit: Of note is the elevation viewing hole on the back of the upper receiver on page 8. I have never seen any mention of that previously.

The hole in the back was an M16A1E1 test sample characteristic (as illustrated in my sketches) and was originally a feature of the Colt LMG that had brought the concept to us, but after the Operational Test we changed it to the left side because the troops had issues with it as well as being able to tweak a full 800M out of the dial; and that allowed us to replace the rarely used 800M M16A1E1 flip aperture for the M16A2's more useful and practical 200M ghost ring.

Such uppers are extremely rare outside of a few military museums because it is likely Colt made less than 50.  And those uppers would have been made from highly modified M16A1 upper forgings.

All the test samples (about 40 each) had M16A1 teardrop forward assist plungers.  The round plungers came later.

i have this one and am not sure if it's original.  wanted to get your thoughts on it:

got what i think is a prototype or one off barrel to go with it.  C MP CHROME BORE with a 7 stamped under it.  it is 1/7 and the taper behind the handguard cap is a little off.

Not sure which part mentioned in regards to the teardrop FA or the Colt proof marks. I have a Colt A2 upper that has the Colt stamp, but only the C in a square.

This is the one I gave Mark Humphreville at Picatinny Arsenal.
SEARCH: Lutz on SAR site and click on the pdf manuals for the M16A1E1.

This SAR is a treasure trove of information, but I could not find my M16A2 interview from about 1995 or so...
Hello and thanks Mr. Dan Shea!

Coldblue: Your interview was in SAR's predecessor Machine Gun News.  I don't know if they have the rights to republish the MGN articles as that magazine was owned by a different party; however, their webstore has some of the MGN back issues for sale.
