What would be a better hunting round for hunting deer and hogs?  I am looking to buy a rifle for hunting both hogs and deer and don't know which caliber to get.  Any other caliber suggestions?

Either will work as well as the other. Proper bullet selection and proper shot placment are more important then the about 12mm in case length diferance between the two.

The only advatage the 06 has over the 308 is that you can use heavier bullts on the top end(up to 220gr IIRC) I shoot the same weight and type bullet for hunting out of both my 30-06 and my .308. The other advatage to the 06 is that per bullet weight you can load it a bit hotter then you could in .308 if you handload. Most commercial 06 loads are downloaded from what they could be.

What kind of rifle do you prefer?  If you like a semi, I would say .308 is about it...bolt gun doesn't really matter.

Both are quite popular and are suitable for all North american big game except for big bears.  If elk and moose were also on my intended list of game 30-06 might  as photoman mentioned be a better choice due to its ability to fire heavier projectiles.  For general deer/hog use I think that .308 is a great round and is usually chambered in lighter shorter rifles which may be a consideration if trudging through rough terrain.

For deer almost any commercially available bullet will work fine given proper shot placement into the heart lung area.  For hogs many recomend using a tougher bonded bullet.  I have taken many of the variables out of the equation and handload a 165gr Nosler Partition and use it for everything, that way I dont have to resight my rifle for different game.

Flip a coin. They have similar ballistics. The .06 may be a little more versital, while the .308 is a short action. I have both.

Try as I might, with bullets under 180 grains, It can't get any appreciable increase in velocity handloading for my .30-06 than for my .308 (and stay within published guidelines)...

It really boils down to which caliber can you find a rifle you like in...  Some people may suggest that the slightly higher shoulder angle of the .308 cartridge contributes to it being a more accurate cartridge.  Maybe.  I like that with my favorite powders (Varget especially) that loads almost fill a .308 cartridge versus leaving void space in a .30-06...

But if you don't reload, all of that is a moot point.  Look up factory data and the two are damn near identical (in bullet weights under 180 grains)

I am a .30-06 fan. I have both a bolt action Rem. 700 BDL and a Garand.
Garands can be finicky when it comes to ammo. However, when looking at a bolt gun for hunting, I would suggest a .30-06 hands down.
You can either use 110 grain loads for varmint hunting, or get some sabots and hurl some .22 caliber bullets at 4000 fps.
On the other extreme, you can load up some big 200 grain bullets if you really want large animal deep penetration.
For hunting deer and hogs, then the 150-180 gr is darn near perfect. The .308 is great for semi-autos, but the .30-06 just has so much more to choose from as far as bullet selection goes.
It is no accident that it has been a favorite rifle cartridge for 100 years.

Around here, you can buy 30-30, 308 and 30.06 (100 years old next year, yea!) just about anywhere.

I like the short action bolt rifle. But, I have a long action  too.

Give me the .308 for the game you describe. Not that much difference in performance in todays ammo. 30.06 is loaded to be used in weapons made from 1906 to present and all in between so performance is kept at a minimum for the older weapons (some of which may be better made).

.308 has been around since what? 1957?

See where I'm going with this?

If you handload, with todays powders the .308 can equal the .30-06 in performance and accuracy in a nut shell.

YMMV - IMO

Since I can't speak to a rifle for hogs, I shouldn't say anything, but I can't seem to resist offering my $0.02 for deer.  Either '06 or .308 is a fine choice in my opinion, but I would personally prefer to shoot something with a little less recoil than either one, there is still plenty of retained energy at normal distances to take a deer with a softer shooter such as a 6.5 x 55 Swede or a 7x57 Mauser. If you are in wide open country you might want to consider a flat shooting .270. If you think you might want to hunt elk some day, I'd choose the '06 over the .308.

Thank for all the replies and all the good info.  I am eyeing a rifle at a local gunshop that is in 308.
I think I may purchase it.  It is a slightly used Savage model 10 with a heavy barrel.  It's at a good price but now I have to decide on which scope.  Thanks for all the info.

Sounds like a great rifle. I have heard nothing but good things about Savage products.
Enjoy!!

30-06 is like the 45 acp and the .308 is like the .45 Gap
