I just picked up a SP1 lower with a Colt m16 upper. It has a 20" C MP 1/7 A1 Profile barrel.  Any info on this barrel would be great as I have never seen a similar barrel.

Barrel is marked 1/7  ???

Sounds like a Colt A2 barrel. They were marked C MP as well.

There are some lightweight 20" barrels done in 1/7 for export sales.

Ahhh! There was a subject somewhere about this recently.

I have one that came on an M16 Surplus upper from Gunny's Surplus.  It is a pencil barrel and is a 1/7 5.56 NATO CMP barrel, so they are out there.

I wonder why they put the faster twist on export barrels.

Being that in europe the air is thicker over there thus the 1/7 twist rate.We don't need the faster twist rate here cause by the time the air gets here it has thinned out some from the trip over here.

FNMI marked A1 profile barrels are 1/12

FNMI 1/7 barrels are either A2 or A4(F FSB) Govt profile.

Funny though, those barrels may be set up for the thinner air on this side of the world, but they sure seem to get used elsewhere a lot more....

Wikipedia:

During the 1970s, NATO members signed an agreement to select a second, smaller caliber cartridge to replace the 7.62 mm NATO. Of the cartridges tendered, the 5.56 mm was successful, but not the 5.56 mm loading (3.56 g (55 gr), M193 Ball) as used by the U.S. at that time. Instead, the Belgian FN SS109 loading was chosen for standardization. The SS109 used a heavier 4 g (62 gr) bullet with a steel core inserted, fired at a lower muzzle velocity for better long-range performance, specifically to meet a requirement that the bullet be able to penetrate through one side of a steel helmet at 600 m.

My guess is the 1/7 twist better stabilizes the 62 gr. bullet...

I am pretty sure there are FNMI 1/7 20" pencil barrels out there, I have seen them on the EE occasionally, but none in the last 6 months

Do you have a source that says otherwise?

I have one on a Colt C7 upper. It is correct for the Model 711 Export version of the Colt M16A2. This is how the early ones were set up anyway.

If you have one of these barrels you have a rare gem. Now, sell it to me for cheap!!! LOL

I like this upper as it makes my A1 just as effective as the A2.

I'll try to take pics sometime.

I have seen the 1/7" FN made A1 profile barrels out there. J&T used to sell them.

I would be very leery of any vendor who claims to sell authentic FN products. We have been through this before numerous times. When the truth comes out it is usually that the parts come from a sub who occasionally supplies FN as these parts rarely have correct FN markings or proofs. A FN sub does not equal an FN product.

To utilize the TDP, FN is contractually prohibited from U.S. commercial sales of rifles or components. We all know legit FN parts occasionally come on the market. Thoughs that do are commonly produced components from the A2, A4 or spare parts contracts to include the A1. FN does not sell it's rejects, they are destroyed. FN parts usually surface through surplus sales from secondary agencies or that have bypassed demil from a DRMO, serviceable or not.  Last time I looked, A1 profile 1/7 barrels were not part of the spec or TDP. The chances of such an animal making it to the streets would seem remote.

It is remotely possible that FN has produced such a barrel under contract for FMS as has Colt. Personally, I would have to see photographic evidence of a “Correctly” marked and proofed FN barrel before I would believe it from any vendor or EE sale.

My .02, YMMV,

FN introduced the SS109 ball and L110 tracer ammunition in 1981.

Export variants of the M16 with a 1/7 twist would have been produced before the introduction of the government profile barrel.

Wrong, but thanks for attempting to set me straight with your superior knowledge professor. FNMI makes 1/7 pencil barrels at the South Carolina plant for the export market. Singapore is one such customer and I have handled one of the complete rifles. The SC based vendor at the gunshow had about a dozen of them as barrel assemblies and complete uppers.

Wow,

Sorry you took it that way. I was not trying to “set you straight”.

Sharing your knowledge on the subject would have been educational to everyone interested on the subject. You know, what this place is suppose to be about.

I posted based on my experience on the subject relating to issued rifles and components in the U.S. inventory that are commonly encountered and/or erroneously claimed by vendors.

I am happy to hear that FN has FMS of said rifles. More power to the vendor who is the recipient of whatever is getting out. However that is the exception rather than the rule from past experiences or claims from numerous vendors selling claimed FN parts .

The personal attack was not warranted,

Wpns Man

I was digging around in some of my pictures and finally found the picture showing the markings on a pencil barrel that I luckily got from Gunny's Surplus.  It's on a Colt Upper that's counter bored with an arsenal refinish.

No, mine was on a 603 upper that had the couter bored front pivot pin area.  I guess the upper was originally on an xm16e1, but I'm not absolute on that.  Anyway the upper has an arsenal refinish on it, so the barrel was probably used when it was refurb during it's life cycle in the military.

IIRC, Colt made a number of these for the Israeli Army; simply put, they needed barrels for their M16A1s that would stabilize SS109/M855.

Been in storage for awhile, but an easy clean up with oil (see bottom barrel).  Bags are dated 1991.

Every time I bring this to the public range, the rangemaster says, "Now that's a classic"  LOL
But I know everyone in this forum can look and easily find a few clues that this isn't Grandpa's old A1.
Except for the pushpin (Keng's?), its all Colt.   And this puppy loves Hornady 75gr TAP.

Indeed.    This forum is for people who care about the preservation, building and the love of retro guns and history.  If he want's to act like a jerk he can go someplace else, buy a rail and hang a bunch of crap off of his gun.

Do not forget SAK made some 1 in 7 A1 profile barrels. I know I have one got it from SARCO several years ago now. Mine is on a USGI Colt A2 upper.
