In light of a couple of threads floating around in here....

I'm in the market for a new scope, and part of the equation will be to get 1-4 power or 1-6. For those of you that have used both, what would you recommend for general use out to about 600 yards with .223/5.56?

If money isn't an issue I don't see why not to get the extra magnification. I went from SWFA 1-4x to SWFA 1-6x and have no regrets.

The right choice here depends on what you will mostly be using the scope for which is the first question you need to ask yourself. The biggest mistake most people who is buying a scope end up doing is trying to buy one that covers ALL possible uses – the reason being that there is no such animal. If you try to cover all the basis you will likely end up compromising the one situation that you will use the scope mostly for.

If you are shooting mostly close quarters i.e. within 25 yards with the occasional 100-200 yards shoot, buy the 1-4 because it will be lighter than the 1-6x and weight is a big factor when you are shooting close and lugging your gun around. I don’t mean around the range in a match but if you have to lug it around should you need it to defend yourself.

If you are shooting longer range i.e. 600 yards, a 6x will be a good choice if you are shooting a tactical match with large steel targets. For precision shooting, even a 10x will be under powered if you want to hit the X-ring. For precision shooting at 600 yards, go for at least a 32x. Remember, an F-class X-ring is only 3” across. Weight is not a factor here.

Buy the right tool for the job, and not a jack of all trades and master of none.
