I posted this question in the build section & got a bunch of views, but no answer. I'm hopeful someone with more experience than I have can help.
How does one determine if their buffer & spring are appropriate for a particular gun? Most builds are from mil-spec parts kits. In my case, Green Mountain Barrel was selling 14" 5.56 NATO barrels meant for a company making piston ARs. The gas port looked bigger than my 16" carbine port. The 2.5" Vortex & spacer make the barrel 16.25". I'm using an M16 BCG for safety. Green Mtn said the barrel would work with either a piston or direct gas gun.
The gun works great with XM193, but I haven't tried anything else. Cases get ejected to about the same place as and cases look fine. But, I've reads about "over-gassed" ARs beating themselves into early wear & failure––which I'm trying to avoid, as I like this gun.
How does one determine if a heavier buffer or spring is required? Or, does one simply buy & experiment?
Thank you & Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for the info. Will try other ammo to see what happens.
