I'm looking at having a blank turned down to 14" and adding a perm Phantom flash hider.

The phantom is 2.25", so the OAL would be a legal 16.25"

I've heard that once you drop under 14.5", reliability can start to be an issue.

Would that 1/2" matter regarding reliability?

If not, I'd rather save length and weight on the rifle...

Actually, the Phantom sits down on the barrel because of the threading, so you actually need a 14.5" (or pretty close) barrel to be legal if permanantly attaching the Phantom.

I have a 14.5 inch barrel and no problems ever. Many thousands of happy rounds down range with it.
