I'm shopping for uppers, looking at a CMMG mid-length.

I really like the aesthetics of the 14.5" barrel with the fixed phantom flash hider, but the 16" barrel with an A2 doesn't look bad either.

So my question is this:  At what range will I start to notice the difference between a 14.5" and 16" barrel?  In this case we're talking 1:7" twist.

get the 16" I have the 14.5 and you are limited if you want to do any work such as removing the FSB or changing the Flash Suppressor with a permanent suppressor.

10.5".

Oh oops...I meant grab a 16" I like the 14.5" but it will limit your options if you decide to "accessorize" a bit. The difference between a 16" and 14.5"...erm...0.5" at 300 yards maybe?

That would be the only reason to choose a 14.5"

Get the 16" middy

I tend to agree with everyone suggesting the 16" for the simple reason of not limiting yourself with a perm. flash hider.

That said, below is just a little ballistic data for you between the 14 and 16 (all else equal).  Bullet used was mil-spec 5.56 55gn. FMJ.

MUZZLE VELOCITY:
16 = 3037 fps.
14 = 2911 fps.

MAX ACCURATE RANGE BEFORE GOING TRANSONIC:
16 = 650 yrds.
14 = 600 yrds.

100 YARD BULLET ENERGY:
16 = 862 ft. lbs.
14 = 786 ft. lbs.

MAX RANGE FOR FMJ FRAGMENTATION (2700 fps critical vel.)
16 = about 88 yds.
14 = about 60 yds.

Go with a 16", 1-7 twist, chrome lined mid-length barrel!

If I had to choose to own just one I would go for the 16.  A little more velocity, and a lot less flash.  Using the same ammo my 14 with the Izzy puts out a hugh flash ball and the 16 with a A2 birdcage puts out nothing.  Sometimes less is better.
