Which is shorter overall, and what hider should I use?  Any pics would be great!  I think I am leaning towards the 14.5 but don't know if I should use extended a2 or phantom? Thank's

The 14.7" length is meant specifically for use of an A2 FH to get you to the legal 16" when the FH is permanently attached. If you're deciding between the Phantom and the extended A2, the 14.5" barrel is what you want.

ETA - If you don't shoot in the dark the choice becomes driven more by cost (about the same, I think) and aesthetics.

I did not think I would like the phantom FS but I liked it a lot in person.  Looks very nice on the 14.5

I like my 14.7 but deep in my mind I expect to eventually have an uninformed range Nazi mess with me. It looks exactly like a true M4 barrel.  I just like the A2 hider better so I chose it.

Most of the nazis at my range don't know the difference!

ETA: Eh, decided to update my comparison series.  New photos added.  No, really, I don't like M4s... much.

Mine looks short but has a SDI extended flash hider done by Adco. It has about two wafers of peel washer.

14.5 + Phantom/Vortex

You will end up with a 16" gun either way, why not one which has an effective FH?

I guess I'm a member of the 14.5"/extended SDI club.

Some people go 14.7 + A1/A2 so they can mount an Omni style suppressor right to the flash hider. (it doesn't fit extended flash hiders)

Some go 14.5 + FH because the QD mount for their suppressor is long enough to bring it to 16"

14.7 all the way

14.7 was started so the a $10 flash hider could be used for cost effectiveness.

This is the way to go.  Function over form.  Over time, what is most effective and functions best becomes the most desirable form and is considered sexy.  I loves me some Vortex.

<Al Pacino in Heat>...She's got a GREAT ass vortex !!!!11!one!!!!1!!!<Al Pacino in Heat>

Thank's for all the pics, but are these all short to begin with because they have the last step down before the hider, or are you guys getting it turned down like that when you have it pinned haven't seen any pics yet of one without it?

they are all 14.5" or 14.7" barrels from the factory, so to speak.

I have both
14.7 +birdcage
14.5 +Phantom

same size

In 2001 I had my BUSHY cut to 14.7
Way before anyone sold them!

I like the 14.7 & 14.5
to me they are about equal as Far as Velocity goes

14.5 or 14.7 can't decide?

I'd get the 14.7 plus a Phantom or SDI extended A2.

ETA: Great pics Augee, thanks for posting those.

RRA Elite CAR A4 w/16" HBAR.  Solid, accurate, and heavy at just under 10lbs:

Same rifle after weight reduction program consisting of lightweight profile and chop to 14.7" with same pinned A2 FH + CTR stock and EOTech 512.

Combined, I reduced the total weight by just under 2½ lbs!  Besides being much lighter, the balance is great and with Steve's (Adco) target crown, the accuracy at 300ys is fantastic (measured it with the previous 12x scope on for accuracy testing).
