In the "it's time for a new service rifle" department, Taiwan is joining that club:

"The entirely domestically developed and built rifle features numerous improvements over the existing T91 and T65K2 models, said Lieutenant Lee Chien-ting (???), who is involved in the research and development of the rifle at the bureau.

The barrel of the XT112 rifle is polygonal and thickened compared with the T91 and T65K2 models, resulting in the XT112's improved accuracy of groups of 9.8 cm at 100 m compared to the T91's groups of 14.5 cm at 100 m, Lee said.

The barrel also boasts a longer life expectancy of 10,000 rounds, compared with 6,000 rounds with previous models.

In addition, the selector lever, the magazine release button, and cocking handle latch, are present on both sides of the XT112 to allow easy access regardless of the user's dominant hand, whereas on the previous models they are only present on one side, he said."

The mag in the pictured rifle appears to be the same (Taiwan-made) mag sold here under the UTG Leapers brand, but in a FDE color:

Nice looking weapon.
Did somebody install the trigger guard upside down?

It’s built in guard like the Aero enhanced lowers.

It’s good to see more and more countries adopting some sort of AR… the design & ergonomics are still GTG after 60+ years

Looks like a PSA knock off with Magpul Knockoff stock, grip, mag and flip ups.

Maybe PSA has a new customer.

Looks to have a non-standard receiver rail height a la HK416.

So it's an AR 15 with a happy switch?

The real question is: 5.56x45 so we can supply the ammo or the CCP caliber for all the battlefield pickups?

Not gonna lie that stock is a good magpul imitation.
Overall it looks like a cheap AR but if it works it works.

It's hard to tell from the picture but I'm guessing that this rifle was not designed to take a bayonet?

With Black, Bronze at at least a couple shades of FDE/Tan, it feels like this build is going for the Hungarian Moonshine vibe.

Thanks for sharing the picture.

Taiwan had been using piston AR since 1976.

T65--->T65K1--->T65K2--->T86--->T91--->XT112

65 = 1976
86 = 1997
91 = 2002
112 = 2023

I carried T65K2 during my 2-years (early 1990s) compulsory service in Taiwanese Army.

@mlin That T77 subgun, wow.  Kind of surprised they adopted that considering how terrible the baseline MAC series is (I own a transferrable M11-A1).  Hopefully they have phased it out or upgraded with Lage uppers.

Personally, I am extremely entertained that I hear how awful the AR15 is everyday (online + job in guns) and yet it is only getting more and more successful.

It’s the only color in nature guaranteed year round. Whether it’s summer with green overgrowth, or winter with snow cover over bare trees and dead foliage, earth browns are the only guarantee.

I fully expected a bullpup of some kind. If it's made in Taiwan I would FO. As close to Japanese quality as you can get in a gun I suppose.

I never saw a T77 in person while serving (in the infantry unit). I think it was not widely adopted, only used by special forces, military police, and maybe LEO SWAT units based on some photos I remember seeing in the past.

You may wonder why MP need subguns. MP in Taiwan serves variety of function, not just the traditional military police role. They work with Taiwanese Secret Service to protect President, safeguard capital city, and major government infrastructures. MP also work with police to provide support in some high profile major crime crack down.

I don't recall seeing T77 in recent photos. My guess is that the subguns were largely phased out with more potent 5.56mm Carbine/SBR like the trend you seeing in US LEO and military units.
