A strong punch, good aim and hammer swing will do it.

Helps to have a punch that the smaller pin sized portion is only about a 1/4" longer before the punch starts to get bigger. Then swap to a regular length one after the pins start moving.

I took a caliper and measured each end of the pin because I heard the SW's are backwards. I am hitting the smaller end of course...would it help to heat it up a little bit. I am hitting it pretty hard...

you dont want the FSB and barrel to move when you strike it... it takes the momentum out of your shot.
if you dnot have a jig... get a friend to hold it firm.... and dont be affraid to smack the hell out of it! |

A Hockey puck works great to lay the FS on if you have one. Using a punch with a shorter pin works great as stated above to get things moving. Do not be afraid and give it a good smack. It will move and there is really no need to heat it/just SMACK IT! M4QUADRAIL

The barrel needs to be very secure and you need to hit the pins HARD with a concave punch.

Having done a few, I've found that my 48 oz. ball peen works the best.
That and a taper pin punch will drive out the most reluctant pin One good shot on an immobilized fsb with a 48 oz. hammer, (hitting it like you mean it) and the pin will move.

Remember that S&W pins are directional. They only go in one way. Make sure it is the right way. The S&W manual states that you should hammer or push the pins out from the right side. The ejection port side.

I tried and tried but since I was converting it to the adams arms kit, I said screw it and used a dremel to cut it off.

Start with a 2.5lb whammer & a large punch with a larger face (Not smaller than the pin!) use 2 wooden blocks to support the FSB; whach that sucker until the pins are even with the top of there hole, then change to your smaller punch to drive the pins out. Works every time!

I've learned to start with a large punch (1/4") just to get them moving.
Hit them hard. Once the pins have gone down to about flush from the large punch, I switch down to my smaller (1/4") punch to drive them through and out. |

Most people don't have the desire to hit those pins like they need to be hit. I have done a few... massive hammer, VERY HARD strike, and a SOLID base is a must. |

You hold it steady let your buddy drive them out , not his gun he will whack em harder than you.

I've had a couple that where hard as hell to get out. I ended up using a hydrolic press and they came out with ease :)

That's an ingenious solution! I just went with a $3 nail punch from Home Depot. Best $3 for gun parts i ever spent. I usually secure my barrel to a soft piece of wood on my work bench with a C clamp and leather work gloves as padding/friction material. With a solid whack on each pin with the nail punch and a big hammer, the FSB pins come loose no problem, even with BCM uppers (tightest FSB pins i've experienced thus far)

I have yet to find a pair that wont come out with a simple 16oz hammer and a 1/4 steel punch.
Key is lock the upper so it can not move, then all the force you apply goes into the pin. This will not not take 12d single strike driving blows. I lock the barrel in a vise butting up against the fsb, bag the fsb (to catch the pins as they fly out) and drive the pins out. |
