Yeah, it has been in use a long time, but I have heard complaints about it suggesting that it is not powerful enough. Have you heard these? What do you make of them?

Best .223/5.56 round on the market for self defense is the 75gr OTM sold by Hornady, Black Hills, and HSM. Of all the .223 bullet it provides the most optimal wound channel while meeting all FBI & IWBA guidelines.

Youy are absolutely correct about a larger round being a better choice for self-defense; buy a shotgun. By the way, don't believe much of what the networks puport to be factual.

I would warn you that you should not get your information on bullet performance from CBS news releases. The article you reference is full of bad and erroneous information. Read the link at the top of the Ammunition Forum, where people that actually know what they are talking about have posted the facts.

However, the AR15 rifle is superior in many respects. It has many advantages over any shotgun, and almost no disadvantages. The best SD round is the 75gr 5.56mm Hornady TAP...by far. This assumes you have a weapon with 1/7 or 1/8 rifling.

No. The 'Standard' Nato round uses the 62 gr FN SS109 projectile, which has a lead core and a soft steel penetrator. The US loading for it, M855, has the tip painted green to distinguish it from the older US Standard Load M193 (which used a 55gr FMJ). M193 is close to obsolete and is only needed in the Military for the old M16 & M16A1s they may still be lurking in the armories of reserve componenets. |

You can get the 75gr OTM also as 75gr TAP in .223 (which uses brass cases), from Black Hills in brass cases (red box new and blue box remanufactured), and from HSM. HSM makes a 5.56 load if you really think you need the extra tweak in velocity. Even if you're using a SBR the 75gr in .223 pressure will create that great wound profile out well past expected shooting distances. If you're using a 14.5" or greater it's still fragmenting violently well past typical combat distances. |

What a piss-poor title. Those words sicken me 
On another note: LE223T3 for going through glass Hornady T2 or MK262MOD1 for soft targets M855 for "hard" targets such as trying to disable equipment (Good luck, machines are TOUGH!). COnceivably, the M855 round COULD destroy a cylinder wall in some of the newer aluminum-block engined vehicles. Most of these only have fiberglass fenders/hoods and a lucky shot might just mess up the cylinder and cause catastrophic falure. Surely not something to "aim for" though. Just a technical footnote and full of theory. |
