I will never be a sniper, and am interested primarily in self defense.  Is the .223 round a good manstopper?  I like the .260 DPMS AR10, but am concerned about whether the round itself will survive.  Any opinions on the .260 making it?  Any one know of stats on .223 stops by law enforcement?

Yeah, it has been in use a long time, but I have heard complaints about it suggesting that it is not powerful enough.  Have you heard these?  What do you make of them?

Just for clarification's sake, the .260 DPMS is not an AR-10. It is their own version of a 7.62 capable AR. The AR-10 is strictly an Armalite 7.62 rifle, and the uppers and lowers of the DPMS and Armalite are not compatible.

Thanks for the ammo advice.  Although the military has used this round for many years, there have been some complaints about it, as shown in this link:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/06/07/cbsnews_investigates/main1692346.shtml

This is why I wondered if a larger round may be a better choice for self defense.

Youy are absolutely correct about a larger round being a better choice for self-defense; buy a shotgun.  By the way, don't believe much of what the networks puport to be factual.

I have a Remington 870 Marine Model, among others, so I have the shotgun covered.
And I agree with your assessment regarding network news.  I actually just saw the story online.

So if SHTF, my Federal XM193 FMJ is no good?

I figured that.  I'm not a military guy, so pardon me if this is a dumb question, but isn't the standard NATO rd a 55gr FMJ?

The best SD round is the 75gr 5.56mm Hornady TAP...by far.  This assumes you have a weapon with 1/7 or 1/8 rifling.

Good luck finding it.

M855 is 62gr, since the early 80s.

Ye olde stuff is 55gr, M193.

I love it when people reply, TAP 75gr 5.56 is best. Then someone asks, "where can I find this round?" To which one replies. "You cant its sold to LEOs only"

The alternative is buying the overpriced TAP FPD with the gimick black nickel coating so Hornady can rip you off some more.

I don't believe he said, "You cant its sold to LEOs only", he said, "good luck finding it"... and based on my experiences, it's getting tough to find some of this ammo...

What a piss-poor title. Those words sicken me

On another note:

LE223T3 for going through glass
Hornady T2 or MK262MOD1 for soft targets
M855 for "hard" targets such as trying to disable equipment (Good luck, machines are TOUGH!). COnceivably, the M855 round COULD destroy a cylinder wall in some of the newer aluminum-block engined vehicles. Most of these only have fiberglass fenders/hoods and a lucky shot might just mess up the cylinder and cause catastrophic falure. Surely not something to "aim for" though. Just a technical footnote and full of theory.
