Is this a good deal?  Should I get one?

Grade 4 - LAV III condition. sloshed around in the back of the LAV for a while. Scratches, wear marks,

chunks missing. $79.95

Was thinking about building a clone using one of these surplus Diemaco C8 uppers:

Seems like a lot of a trashed stock, but I guess they're pretty rare nowadays and can ask that price?

Here's what the uppers look like.

Guess it won't be a perfect clone, but it will be a step in the right direction.  They look pretty similar to the 723 uppers:

I think it’s perfect. There were probably more 723s running around Mogadishu then anything. I would pay stupid money for what you got there.

Well, my grade 4 ( LAV III condition. sloshed around in the back of the LAV for a while. Scratches, wear marks, chunks missing)  Fibrelite stock showed up.

Can't believe I shelled out $75 for it.  No N1 markings, but the vendor is reputable and said they don't all have them.  Still waiting for the complete C8 upper.

BCG arrived as well:

Also picked up a light off a buddy, not even sure if it's rhe right one but sort of looks right:

C8 upper showed up in the mail yesterday:

More pics of the upper here:

https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Diemaco-Colt-Canada-General/118-727652/&page=3

The light mount is inbound, should be here in a few weeks.  Now I just have to find an Aimpoint 3000 or 5000....or is it 9000?

Threw it on a spare CC lower I had laying around:

Anyway, it's what I have for now.

THAT. IS. AMAZING!  I think you’ve done a great job and I’m pretty jealous of your rifle! I really need to come up to Canada and smuggle some of those to the south. I mean it yours is one of my top favorites.

I think you have the correct flashlight with a more modern but still military used tail cap. The round 660 from what I understand is the “correct” light.

Round 660 with original tail cap

Newer 660 with the clicky and tape switch tail cap

The Colt model RO723 was really put together with whatever parts Colt had on hand. We’ve seen them in a ton of different configurations. I 100% believe
Diemaco/Colt Canada MFG’d superior quality parts.

Awesome info, thanks!  That info on the light will help a lot and I may try to track down the correct tail cap.  Finding the correct vintage Aimpoint might be fun...

I wonder how far my OCD will take me on this, because originally I was going for close enough, an itch is starting to develop and I want to scratch, lol!

When it comes to clones, I always go by what BurtSaun1049 said (I think in the Mk18 or Mk12 clone thread):

II. I'm disappointed with my inspired build because it just doesn't scratch the itch and no one wants to see pics of my rifle. I bet I can sub out a few parts that are more expensive for cheaper options.
III. Alright, why did I waste my money on those non-spec parts when I knew I wouldn't be pleased. I'll settle for a 90% build with some minor, non-clone subs.
IV. Alright, I admit I am powerless to resist a spec clone, and I atone for my prior sins and building crap-tier builds that neither I like not anyone else wants to see. I will now build as to-spec as I reasonably can minus getting an M16A1 lower.
V. All your clone are belong to me. I am ECPrevatte, destroyer of clones.

I’ve also been told that there was an early surefire weapon light that predated the 660 and from some of the older “in the wild picture” it could have been used.  But it’s hard to tell from some of the pics and I have yet to find the light yet. The 660 is my favorite “older” light having had both versions of it. The early 6p’s and round body 6p’s are dope too but I can’t find the correct tail cap for those.

I started rummaging through my spare parts bin and dug through my bag of A2 grips, trying to figure out the differences between DPMS, Colt, Daniel Defence, Armalite and CMMG, and to be honest, I could hardly tell any of them apart.  Some of them were shinier than others, but that's about all I could detect.  The Diemaco ones are D marked inside, and that's the only one I can actually tell apart.

So I pulled one out to work on and threw it in the pile of stuff I was going to paint today - Skinny hand guards and my N1 (grade 4, sloshed around in a LAV etc) stock.

I also remembered from one of Garand Thumb's latest videos titled "Military M4 vs High End Civilian AR15" where he mentions sanding down the finger bump in his A2 grips.  I've got a few A1 grips, and I wasn't intentionally trying to turn an A2 grip into an A1 grip, but I do prefer the feel of the A1 grip, largely because it was missing the bump.  Since I had so many A2 grips, I decided to experiment a little and try what Flannel Daddy does and sand off the bump.

I started off with pretty rough grit paper, I think it was 60 grit, and even then it took a while and it certainly didn't look pretty.

Next, I took some 150 grit paper to it and it sort of smoothed it out.  I actually have 200, 400, 600 and even 1000 and 2000 grit sand paper, but I didn't bother because I wasn't exactly trying to make an A1 grip, and besides, the thing was going to get painted anyway so I stopped at 150.

I was also experimenting with paint and wanted to try some Tamiya paint colors.  From my experience, Tamiya spray paint produced very thin coats of paint and when I finally do up my CANSOFCOM clone, the paint won't fill in the shallow engraving I had done on it.

These two colors actually turned out a bit brighter than I'd hoped.

The NATO brown turned out to almost have an orange tinge to it, so I'll have to find something a bit darker for the CANSOFCOM clone.  Or maybe it's just because the paint looks so fresh, it looks a bit too bright?  Anyway, this was never going to be a perfect clone anyway, so I'll see how it turns out after some use.

I went by the local gun shop and my pal there helped me source a single 1 inch ring for my Surefire.  I think it's supposed to be a Weaver mount, but beggers can't be choosers, and I'll grab the proper one when I get a chance.  This will at least get the light on the rifle for now.

I also dug out the Surefire tape switch for this build.

I ended up using spacers for the mount because the barrel profile was so thin, the body of the Surefire contacted the bayonet lug.  It works just fine if the light was mounted on the side, but most pics I've seen have the flash light mounted underneath.  I'll probably just try to source a taller 1 inch Weaver mount for the light.

This build is sitting on a Colt Canada lower right now, but I'm short on lowers so I'll eventually try to get a Colt USA M4 lower.  The only two M4 lowers I have are sitting on my Mk18 clones right and it's hard to break them up.

Overall, I'm content with what I've built, despite the paint turning out brighter than I'd like.  I found trying to source the clone correct Aimpoint 3000 or Aimpoint 5000 to be a complete pain in the dick, and at times, those fuckers cost more money than I'd like to spend for such an old red dot, but I managed to find a cheap Aimpoint 9000 for now.
When it arrives, I'll throw it on, see how it looks and see if I can get away with it.

More pics to follow when it shows up :)

Damn fine job! I’d be proud to call that mine. I have a few Weaver rings and an aimpoint 2000 if you can’t source your own.

That is the route I went as well. While not period accurate it maintains the "look" more or less...

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VbocVbwfUgE/W3EurxG2MEI/AAAAAAAAw_E/tZyKXxgcd5AGZXrcxQ-IeqJjEXUBU087gCKgBGAs/s1600/P8117267.JPG

So I pulled one out to work on and threw it in the pile of stuff I was going to paint today - Skinny hand guards and my N1 (grade 4, sloshed around in a LAV etc) stock.

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UjAGhOHhxzY/W3Eur7TC-TI/AAAAAAAAw_E/4plLvntVJ3YqKEp7tPBulAu8HHJ3kwelgCKgBGAs/s1600/P8117269.JPG

Since I had so many A2 grips, I decided to experiment a little and try what Flannel Daddy does and sand off the bump.

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qz4jjEOKQMA/W3Eu2dq6feI/AAAAAAAAw_g/Iaa8uIuzJqoo46jWDiRa_VpwSqu_idwtACKgBGAs/s1600/P8117275.JPG

I started off with pretty rough grit paper, I think it was 60 grit, and even then it took a while and it certainly didn't look pretty.

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vj2KwDRGsV4/W3Eu2Tg7gRI/AAAAAAAAw_g/1yGFgpv6udQLhM-LuxW2YNPodPdLgdthQCKgBGAs/s1600/P8117276.JPG

Next, I took some 150 grit paper to it and it sort of smoothed it out.  I actually have 200, 400, 600 and even 1000 and 2000 grit sand paper, but I didn't bother because I wasn't exactly trying to make an A1 grip, and besides, the thing was going to get painted anyway so I stopped at 150.

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tC2Q_P_-_uM/W3Eu2Y5OHCI/AAAAAAAAw_g/MJHudoMfDFMDx8c36GhVwSY0zHvidV_SwCKgBGAs/s1600/P8117277.JPG

I was also experimenting with paint and wanted to try some Tamiya paint colors.  From my experience, Tamiya spray paint produced very thin coats of paint and when I finally do up my CANSOFCOM clone, the paint won't fill in the shallow engraving I had done on it.

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eB5EHJOVrIA/W3Eu2RvR4PI/AAAAAAAAw_g/KRVFOc4AnO4hwRiAb15yWPJW-lXPrIQyACKgBGAs/s1600/P8117279.JPG

These two colors actually turned out a bit brighter than I'd hoped.

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9V03kSUBno0/W3Eu2fRC9pI/AAAAAAAAw_g/My_NEx5ooIsBQchixbx7RpjlUUzQzJSdwCKgBGAs/s1600/P8117280.JPG

The NATO brown turned out to almost have an orange tinge to it, so I'll have to find something a bit darker for the CANSOFCOM clone.  Or maybe it's just because the paint looks so fresh, it looks a bit too bright?  Anyway, this was never going to be a perfect clone anyway, so I'll see how it turns out after some use.

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_2W9LttWp7M/W3Eu2V2N-WI/AAAAAAAAw_g/H7kuTpGMDNoFYwpG7M9LUBDRJg7ezbjugCKgBGAs/s1600/P8117282.JPG

I went by the local gun shop and my pal there helped me source a single 1 inch ring for my Surefire.  I think it's supposed to be a Weaver mount, but beggers can't be choosers, and I'll grab the proper one when I get a chance.  This will at least get the light on the rifle for now.

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1Ivtl_6xzGw/W3Eu8QiQzhI/AAAAAAAAw_o/M7own3fnRvoze3xGbGteALzP1RQsixYNACKgBGAs/s1600/P8117271.JPG

I also dug out the Surefire tape switch for this build.

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-V1zQ1BmnA7A/W3Eu8RyWqzI/AAAAAAAAw_o/F9hrQ6Hz8PoOUbnq_iSlooXZg4WXwla1wCKgBGAs/s1600/P8127284.JPG

I ended up using spacers for the mount because the barrel profile was so thin, the body of the Surefire contacted the bayonet lug.  It works just fine if the light was mounted on the side, but most pics I've seen have the flash light mounted underneath.  I'll probably just try to source a taller 1 inch Weaver mount for the light.

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bwfoou2TAIE/W3Eu8RiK_QI/AAAAAAAAw_o/-JjHIw8BwGkYz9WG-GpACHa7QoJIDZD0gCKgBGAs/s1600/P8127285.JPG

This build is sitting on a Colt Canada lower right now, but I'm short on lowers so I'll eventually try to get a Colt USA M4 lower.  The only two M4 lowers I have are sitting on my Mk18 clones right and it's hard to break them up.

My Aimpoint 9000sc ACET 2MOA showed up.

I know there's still hope for me and I haven't completely fallen to the dark side because this model isn't clone correct.  If I can find a cheap 3000 or 5000, I may cave, but this one will do for now.

This one was a pretty good deal and I couldn't turn it down.  The 5000 series seems to fetch a pretty hefty price tag considering it's age, but since cloners have been buying them up, there's a demand for it which drives the price up.  I may still get a clone correct 5000 series one day, but I'm not there yet.

I just threw it on a rail that I had in my spare parts bin.  I should probably source a clone correct carry handle rail, but this will do for now.

I'm not sure I will even keep optics on my clone, but for now, here it sits.  While I had the camera out, I snapped a few more pics of other details.

Thank you.

Sweet score on barrel.

How far down are you getting it cut?  Adco mentioned in order to get the suppressor as close to the FSB as possible the barrel will have to be 12.5".  That is what I'm on the prowl for.  11.5" barrels with FSB are everywhere.....not 12.5".  sheesh.....

ETA:  I'm not sure how far you're going to cut it but I'm afraid if your go to low there won't be enough meat due to the M203 notch.

How about a C8 upper?  I would give my left nut to be able to have suppressors in Kanadastan.

C8 upper would be awesome.  I would still have to swap out barrels though for a .750 diameter.  That is whats needed for the AEM5 M4 collar.

I think those 9000's are great units.  Probably the same route I will take.  The prices for old aimpoints are not worth the juice.  Of course it's all relative.

The barrel I got doesn’t have m4 cuts. So I was going to leave it at 14.5” and have adco profile it for the collar.

-BREAK-

I have not received an email back from them yet. But I should probably check my spam folder. I think you’re good with the 9000, because of the age or our systems and the gun not actually having a “standard” I believe we can get away with a little. Plus with you being in the “north” Itd be hard to get it 100% perfect. The 9000 has the best technology imo of the long aimpoints and would be my choice anyway.

Suppressors are illegal in Canada, but I have this fake one for my Mk12 clone.  I know, fake suppressors are kind of lame, but my hands are sort of tied.  I think I might have a spare AEM5 M4 collar sitting in my spare parts bin.......along with a spare A1 upper and a 16" barrel that I could have chopped to the right length.

I've actually always wanted a clone of MSG Gary Gordon's suppressed 733....should I?

Well, fuck.  Guess I'm going home to dig out that barrel and bring it the chop shop.

Might be a few weeks before I post any updates though, there's a bit of a backlog at the smith.  Will drool over your builds while I patiently wait.
