Who currently builds or sells uppers configured for 762X39 caliber? Personal experiences and recommendations appreciated.

I'd like to know as well, and also would like to know if anyone makes a purpose built 7.62x39 magazine that holds more than 10 rounds.

DPMS, Del-Ton, Olympic Arms and Model 1 Sales all offer standard 7.62x39mm uppers.  Of those, I believe Model 1 is the only one who has them ready to ship.

I've got a Model 1 7.62 upper and I really like the gun. Magazines, though, are the weak spot. C Products is anticipating releasing hi-cap mags in December. I currently use USA 10 rounders, Colt 5 rounders, standard 5.56 mags with 7 rounds and I just this weekend picked up a frankenmag at a gun show and have not tried it yet. The MGW plastic mags did not work for me, at all.

MGI has a modular system that uses AK mags, but it was a tad too pricey for me.

My 7.62X39 upper I built useing a Oly barrel and bolt. Unlike a lot of people my plastic mags function fine. IMHO. YMMV

Thanks guys, From some reading here, I understand that the barrel is obviously different and the 762X39 round requires a new bolt. I understand that mags are hit and miss until better ones come along.

Are any of the other upper or lower parts different in a properly built rifle for this caliber?Specifically can you use any AR type upper?

I was on the C Products site and they did indeed said December as availablity for the SS mags, but not what capacity they will be. If they make at least a quality 20 round mag, I would be enticed to build one.

I have heard 25 and 30 round capacity bandied about regarding the soon to be released C Products mags.  I guess we won't know for sure until they're real.

I agree with you....the mags are the only thing holding me back.

I have a order in for a barrel from Del-Ton, They have the best price for the barrel alone, 165.00 unfortunatley they are out of stock, I talked to a sales rep today and she was hopeing that they would be in by Dec. I plan on sending the barrel to Steve from ADCO and having him lighten it as much as possible and cutting it to 14.7 and permenetly attaching the flash hider. Im also adding a upgraded boltand carrier by MGI so i can shoot the steel cased ammo i have stored up when i owned a AK. Going to go with a LOPro upper from DPMS with no FA  or shell deflector. with either a Aimpoint or Eotech it should make for a nice light little carbine that has some good thump especially within CQB. not to mention the cheap ammo that i bought years ago at 89.00/1000. Hopefully it wiil all come togather for me for Christmas.

Qballs response was interesting. But, let me ask point blank again. What components other than the barrel, bolt, and mag are different between the 762X39 AR and the standard 5.56 AR?

Sanlanman,

The only difference are those you mentioned and the bolt carrier.

I also just canceled my order from Del-Ton, because i found a m4 type 7.62x39 on gunbroker, everything except cbc for under 350.00, saves me having to get the barrel lightened up. Ill probably just keep it a 16.

The barrel and bolt are the only things different. The carrier is the same. And of course the mags. I do use a couple of junky 30rd .223 mags was going to scrap, loaded with 10 7.62X39 and they work.

I hope that the C products mags are much better this time around. I bought some of their first attempt and they are dust collectors. I'm not going to be so quick to jump on the band wagon this time around.
The magazines are for sure the weak link.

bought a J&T 7.62x39 upper awhile back....so far, it's been fantastic.  I even managed to pick up a 30rd USA Frankenmag that works, so life is good.  (keeping my fingers crossed for the CProducts mag to work!)

I picked up 4 franken mags for the 7.62x39  from Forrest Inc (advertises in Shotgun News) several years ago.  Haven't shot many rounds but they hold 20 and function OK in my Colt upper.

Thanks Qball and others for your input. If the latest Cproducts 762X39 mags turn out to be keepers, I can definitely see a 762X39 upper in my future in '08.
