What kind of accuracy should I be getting with my MRP?
14.5" + permanently attached Phantom Q3131A Aimpoint Comp-M3 2MOA Accuracy Speaks single-stage trigger I can't do much better than 5-6" at 100yds. I used to shoot more like 4" with the Bushmaster 14.5+phantom, 1/9 with the same ammo. If I use Black Hills 68gr HP Moly it tightens up considerably though. Is it an issue with the twist? I thought 1/7 should be fine for 55gr. Or did the permanent attaching of the flash hider screw it up somehow? |
I don't think so, although I don't have a torque wrench. I've only put about 300 rounds through it since I got it new, and have never changed the barrel. What kind of groups are others with 14.5" barrels getting with Q3131A? |
THE CORRECT 140 INCH-POUNDS OF TORQUE REQUIRED IS WELL BEYOND "FINGER TIGHT". I CHECK THE TORQUE ON ALL OF MY CUSTOMERS' MRP'S BEFORE SHIPPING. THEY ALWAYS SEEM TO REQUIRE A BIT OF TIGHTENING UP. DUFFY'S POINT ABOUT CHECKING IT WOULD BE WORTH YOUR WHILE.
DIFFERENT LOTS OF THE SAME TYPE AMMO WILL HAVE DIFFERENT ACCURACY, OR LACK THEREOF. Q3131A IS DECENT BLASTING AMMO. IT IS HARDLY PRECISION AMMO, HOWEVER. ALSO, THAT 55 GRAIN Q3131A SHOT BETTER IN YOUR 1X9" THAN IN YOUR 1X7" SHOULD NOT COME AS A SURPRISE. GROUPS SHOT WITH AN AIMPOINT ARE NOT ALWAYS INDICATIVE OF A COMBINATION'S ACCURACY POTENTIAL, TOO. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOUR MRP WILL DO IN TERMS OF ACCURACY, GET SOME DECENT MATCH GRADE AMMO, LIKE FEDERAL PREMIUM OR MK 262. AND A SCOPE! CLEANING THE BARREL NEVER SEEMS TO HURT, EITHER. LET US KNOW HOW YOU DO. WITH LMT CHROME LINED MRP BARRELS, I CAN PUSH MOA WITH DECENT AMMO. OCCASIONALLY, I CAN GO UNDER IT. IN BLASTING AMMO, I HAVE FOUND ONE LOT OF PMC WE HAVE TO BE THE MOST ACCURATE, 1.25 MOA. BUT, THIS IS WITH ME SHOOTING. I'M ADMITTEDLY NOT MUCH OF A BENCH REST SHOOTER. PAUL THINKS THE TWO TRIPLE LATTES I START THE DAY WITH MAY BE PART OF THE PROBLEM. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |

HAVE YOU SEEN A PICTURE OF THE 4.5 POUND FORGING THAT EVERY MRP STARTS LIFE AS ???

A good while after I got my 18" SS 1/8 MRP barrel from WES, I actually benched the 14.5" CL MRP barrel with a NSX 3.5-15X50 scope to see what kind of accuracy I could get out of it while I was waiting on WES to get my 16" SS 1/7. I was pretty unimpressed by the 2 to 2.25 MOA my 14.5" MRP barrel gave me with Q3131A, especially in comparison to the 1.25 MOA of my 14.5" Bushmaster 1/9 HBAR. Winchester 55 grain Ballistic Silvertips gave an improvement to maybe 1.5 MOA, certainly nothing to write home about. But it was the Hornady TAP 75 grain that shot just under MOA with the 14.5". Now out of my MRP barrels, my 18"SS 1/8 barrel seems to prefer 55 to 69 grain loads, my 14.5" CL 1/7 the 75 and 77 grain, and the 16" SS 1/7 loves it all, .5 MOA with 55gr Silvertips or 75gr TAP. |

WHAT'S ONE OF THE BIGGEST REASONS TO OWN AN MRP??? TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ABILITY TO EASILY CHANGE BARRELS.
ALL IT TAKES TO CHANGE BARRELS: PLUS A COUPLE OF MINUTES OF YOUR TIME. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |

Yeah, the first time I swapped my 14.5" for your 18"SS with the T-handled Sekonic torque wrench at the range even those guys with the neon colored stocks on their polished stainless Remington target rifles had to come check it out. They were particularly amazed when I then attached the NSX/LT scope & mount and proceeded to rapidly nail the center of the target at 100 yards with Silvertips after adjusting nothing! Thanks to the MSTN QC brake, they quickly retreated back to their benches at the other end of the range except for one guy who said, "man, I've got to try out that brake, that rifle's not moving at all." He put 6 rounds in less than 10 seconds into a 1/2" circle, and then was all smiles. |
Edwin,
Could you post a link, or any available info on that T-handle torque wrench please. It will make a nice Christmas present. ETA: Disregard I found it www.seekonk.com |

Hm, mine's older so doesn't have the hole, I'd assume you can put any QD sling stud. I wouldn't do it if I had the newer one though, it's an odd place to put a sling

That nice little torque wrench is included in the kits that the KAC SASS now comes with...

Any QD swivel will do... |

I really really need to get me a CQB MRP SBR. You guys are killing me with all the great picks of your shorties. Maybe early next year.
As for accuracy, I'm pleased to report that I'm getting better results out of my 16" SS MRP. I just got some Mk262 (seconds) and was able to get some reliable 3/4MOA groups. These are running around 2725 fps out of this barrel. Up till now, I've been getting roughly MOA with the best factory and hand loads that I've been testing, so far. But, most of my hand loads have been pretty slow in the 2400-2500FPS range. Scope is a Leupold at 10x. Coincidentally, I just started loading 77gr SMK over TAC powder for my 18" Kreiger SPR Mod 0. Groups with this rifle seem to be tightening up as I get up into the 2700 fps range. I usually find a couple of accuracy points as I increase powder charge. But, this just seems to be getting better and better as I get close to the top end. Nothing spectacular in the lower velocities. Do you guys see the same? I'll start testing the TAC in the MRP once I settle on a load for the SPR. |

I PREDICT MRP SALES WILL GO THROUGH THE ROOF AT THE SHOT SHOW.
GOOD NEWS COMING ... THAT'S ALL I'M GOING TO SAY. PLEASE DON'T ASK ME TO ELABORATE. REALLY, REALLY GOOD NEWS ... WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
oh heck yeah. I'll speculate it either has something to do with the basketball team from detroit or 13.6 dividied by 2.... |
Wouldn't it be nice if the surprise from LMT at the SHOT would be that the MRP could use standard barrel extensions?
Pipe dreams. |
So Wes, instead of asking you what the surprise may be, how about this question.......
If I'm not going the 6.8mm route, will it still be a good news for me? |
I attended a "patrol carbine operator" course today using my MRP. Through 900+ rounds fired through the one day course, my MRP was the only set-up on the line that did not have a single failure. I am very pleased
Damn, just when I thought I was over the MRP lust thing. You guys are killin me...
Chen dropped the bomb a while back about a possible piston conversion for the MRP as well. I would be very happy with either. Just 68 days 14 hours 18 minutes and 22 seconds to Shot Show!!!!

TODAY, I SPENT THE MORNING SOUTH OF THE BORDER, IN MISSISSIPPI, SHOOTING THE MID-SOUTH RIFLE METAL MANIA, SHOOTING FOR FUN FOR A CHANGE. FIFTEEN MAGS IN 2.5 HOURS, AND THAT WAS WITH FOUR SHOOTERS IN EACH RELAY. ONE COURSE OF FIRE INVOLVES KNOCKING DOWN 88 REACTIVE STEEL TARGETS, IN ORDER, FROM TWELVE SHOOTING POSITIONS. IT'S CALLED "THE PUNISHER".
I SHOT MY MRP WITH 16" C/L BARREL. IT HAS AN MSTN QC BRAKE ON IT. NOT SURPRISINGLY, I HAD NARY A MALFUNCTION FOR APPROX 400 ROUNDS FIRED FAST AND FURIOUS. THE HEAD RANGEMASTER AND CURRENT RECORDHOLDER, ROSS SANDERS, SHOOTS THE SAME COMBO. I ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH A FAIRLY FULL COMPLIMENT OF TOOLS, SPARES, CLEANING GEAR, ETC. AFTER WE FINISHED THE MORNING'S SHOOTING, I ASKED ROSS IF I COULD CHECK THE TORQUE ON THE BARREL BOLTS IN HIS MRP. AFTER WELL OVER 10,000 ROUNDS FIRED, THEY WERE EXACTLY WHERE WE LEFT THEM A YEAR AGO. CHECK OUT MID-SOUTH SHOOTING: WEAPONSTRAINING.COM NO, YOU CAN'T GO THESE DAYS, UNLESS YOU'RE SOCOM. I WAS 4TH OF EIGHT, BEHIND THE THREE FULL TIME INSTRUCTORS SHOOTING, SO I DID NOT LEAVE TOO DISAPPOINTED. I EVEN HAD THE FASTEST TIME ON ONE STAGE - BEGINNER'S LUCK. NO PRIZES TO GIVE AWAY - SORRY!
WHAT I DID COME AWAY WITH IS CONFIDENCE IN THE MRP AS A VIABLE FIGHTING GUN PLATFORM. I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THERE'S AN MRP OUT THERE THAT HAS BEEN SHOT MORE AND CLEANED LESS (ONCE IN 10,000 ROUNDS) THAN THE ONE ROSS SANDERS HAS BEEN SHOOTING FOR THE PAST YEAR. ROSS LITERALLY SHOOTS MULTIPLE AR'S AND SIG P226'S TO PIECES EVERY YEAR. IF THE MRP HAS HELD UP FOR HIM, IT'S GOOD TO GO. HE KICKED EVERYONE'S ASS HARD WITH IT YESTERDAY, TOO. WES GRANT MSTN.BIZ |
