What would be the best compensator to reduce recoil for the price? It will be going on a standard 16" middy upper. It will be used 75% for 3 gun matches and 25% small critter hunting. I was looking at the YHM comp but what makes the $100+ comps so much better? Do they really reduce recoil that much more?
The DTNC one looks good too. Is there any solid info that X brand ($150) will reduce recoil better than Y brand ($35)? List of comps suggested or am looking at: YHM Phantom comp $30 DTNC $65 Miculeck comp $50 FSC556 $100 Levan linear $35 KAC Muzzle Break ($500)

Miculeck, DTNC, and fsc are all great and ––decent–– priced...
I personally am a fan of the $100 FSC556––- the reduced flash is NICE for dawn/dusk-ish shooting... as far as compensation, i notice the best comp/reduced muzzle rise from the dtnc and fsc––- but they're loud =) |

Thanks. It really needs no flash reducing qualities, as its a comp gun, not my SHTF gun, and im really not bothered by making it nice and loud

I have been running an fcs 556 I know they are not cheep but it works great

I would recommend PRI MSTN Comp. Very effective and less blast than with most other comps.

Please be aware that there are many factors when it comes to recoil management: Adjustable gas system, buffer system, light bolt carrier ... |

I hate to bring a dying thread back to life, but I really do have a question.
I am unable to find this anywhere else on the internet. What exactly makes a compensator good? Number of ports? Direction of ports? Weight? There are a ton out there and a lot are very different from each other.

Nothing beats the JP recoil eliminator (tank brake). Most effective brake design on the market, period. Not likely anything better will come out either.

I have a DNTC on my 16in. middy and I love it. It is loud though.

Funny, I was unpacking some stuff the other day and found my DPMS M4 barrel with the perma mounted AK74 comp. I replaced the barrel with a no ban bushy M4 barrel after the ban expired and it has sat in a box since. Was thinking I need to pick up an upper and assemble this puppy.
Its a pretty good comp, people on either side of you may complain of the noise and blast though

Definitely check out the Nordic Components Comp. It is only $35 and does an outstanding job. I use one on my 3Gun rifle.

I wont lie... on my open 3-gun rig i run a JP tank...with my other mods...we're talking prone A's @ 200m with quarter second splits or better...
The trade-off?... FRACKIN' SHIT that thing BLASTS anyone next to you =) THe angle of the blast is good enough that it minimizes dust/debris... though if there are low-ports.... ooff... i get covered =) The other downside––- random Mall-ninjas coming up to you at the range and saying shit like... "WTF IS THAT!?! You don't need a compensator on a .223!"... Right bud, lets see your splits at 100m+... |

Well... if "for the price" (as you put it) per benefit is really a serious consideration a DPMS A2 from Brownell's would have to be in the running, coming in at under $8. The military thought enough of the A2 design to put it on a rifle or two regardless of what anyone may say about them. All compensators liven up the volume to one degree or another. They were in stock as of last night. Personally, I quite like the Phantom (standard).

The JP brake is awesome, but check your match regulations as it does not meet the 1" x 3" size limit.
The Bennie Cooley brake is another that works good and make the size limit, it was made using the same concept as the JP but to meet size regs. It is hard to beat the quality/price ratio of a Miculek comp. though. YMMV. |

This one is my personal favorite. Its the Sabre Defense Competition Gill brake. I bought a VLTOR upper that happen to have one of these on it.....I liked it so much I bought another one from PK for my M4 Bushy. It really smooths out the recoil.

RRA Tactical Muzzle Brake is cheap, effective and looks good. Not as harsh as others either.

They all work to a various degree. Alot depends on your shooting style. The Miculek is cheap and effective. I run a stock Bennie Hill Rolling Thunder (haven't got around to tuning yet, might just leave it) and it works pretty good. I've also used an Armalite, FSC 556 and a Smith Enterprise.

I have Benny Hill's Comp from Triangle Shooting Sports. Ignoring the fact that Benny is just a really great guy to deal with, the comp is effective and I like it. I can keep the Aimpoint on target after the shot and I have a pretty big wobble zone! Another benefit (?) is that it has a high CDI factor, is really LOUD and makes a cool nuclear looking flash at the muzzle at dusk. Maybe it isn't the comp for someone who doesn't want other shooters coming over to ask, "what is that thing?"

I'm still waiting on some reviews on the BWA X-Comp other than that locked thread when it was introduced. To me it looks like a longer version of the FSC556, which could be promising.
