Just a friendly observation - not making any judgments or criticisms.

It just seems like the new crop of AR15 owners that has joined the ranks recently is very concerned about things like cosmetic perfection of the receiver finish, logos, colors, myriad accessories and BLING in general, more so than I ever noticed before. And less concerned with function, practicality and proficiency.

Not saying there is any wrong with this, everyone buys them for their own reasons.

But is it just me or does this observation have any validity.

IMHO here in Italy 90% of the few people who have an AR, bought it only because they saw it in a war movie

Sunday while at the range I scratched my Brand New Lauer lower, right on the logo. Didnt even notce till I was home later cleaning it. I would much rather ding it up a bit from use than hit it on the safe door. Makes it look a little meaner. I didn't build it 'cause I wanted to look at it.

I don't see any problem with a weapon that looks nice as long as it's paint and accessories don't interfere with function.  I've got a build that is mostly RRA parts.  The receivers didn't match so I coated the whole damn thing with flat black Norrell's.  It looks great now and under the pretty coatings it's still a high quality reliable weapon.  Those folks who get uptight when their gun gets a scratch are just the ghey.  MJD

I'll agree with you _DR, while I am a new Ar-15 owner and new to them, I was a little suprised at how much crap people add to these firearms. Personally I think the Ar's with the handguards that are picatinny rails, verticle front grips, so many lights and sights it weighs half a ton look ridiculous. But I'm more of a keep it bare bones type of person anyway or use what it is only needed etc. Only my opinion and not trying to offend or start anything, you spend the money on it, it is your's to do what you want with.

I think it's more about looking scarey.  Some people seem to have wicked setups with way too many add-ons for my taste.  Though, I'd take any upper half for free if someone wants to complete my gun.

I'm aiming for functionality, with a little bling.  I mean, why else would we have chrome lined parts?

There is ALWAYS middle ground.  Just because the "cool kids" want to post about all their gear whoring doesn't mean there isn't some closet purist, new to AR's, who is sporting a 20" Gov't Profile A2 with NOTHING on it.

Those guys don't post until they get a new carbine or rifle that they intend to gear up....

Why?  Well because posting a pic of a clean looking unmodified 20" A2 is like posting a picture right off the manufacturer's website.

As long as they like ARs, any color combination or frilly accessory is fine with me. We need as many AR fans as we can get to avoid another AWB like we got in 1994.

First post, long time AR owner and lurker. I really never gave too much consideration to "pimpin" out my AR until I came to this site a few months ago. The MRP got me hooked bad, along with the picture threads. I virtually shopped with what other people had put on their rifles and did it to mine.  I did'nt even give a thought to the functionality of it, just looks.
With all that honesty how much of what we actually posess it pure funtion, and NO form. I just look out to my driveway to see another example of form over function.

The things people think look "cool" are for the most part very functional. For example, a tac-light is great for home defense, and many people also fing the VG are very comfortable and offer better control,  so if your going to mount those the best thing to do is also get a railed forend. Now some like these things for functionality while some like to pretend they're cool. I will agree though that much of the time the gear is just for looks.

As for those that are anal about the finish, that's gay IMO. AR's are meant to be used.

+1. Guys posting pics of their weapons blinged out are looking for attention.
My serious rifles aren't blinged out at all. But I don't make a big deal about it, and so I go un-noticed.

Some of us have them right on the receiver

This sticker added 300 fps on the dyno chronograph:

I agree with you DR, although I'm hopeful that the reason we see more discussions about gun porn rather than training is because gun porn is more fun to discuss. While I have a safe full of blinged out rifles, if it came down to choosing between an ACOG or a carbine class I'd take the carbine class any day of the week.

Proficiency cannot be bought. It has to be taught and then practiced.

Edited for sentence structure.

I do agree that it seems that some of the newer folks seem to turn  threads into AR porn instead of tech and technique and tactics.

I also think that a lot of stuff is personal preference.  Given the choice two products that are exactly the same in function people will chose the one looks better to them...

If that weren't the true we'd all be driving the same car with same trim and same color...

I voted yes based on my own experiences.  I was addicted to "bling".  I have a Bushy that started out as a HBAR carbine, then became an M4gery that looked like it was drug thru the EE with a crap magnet.  I realized I didn't need all that stuff except for image and the bling factor.  I sold off the M4 RAS, LMT BUIS, Aimpoint and ARMS mount. and Surefire light.   Stripped the upper down to just the barreled upper and one of CNC Gunsmithings A1 Carry Handles and standard M4 handguards.  I think this is what Lumpy196 calls a "truck gun".

I took the money from the accessories I sold, and put it into functional items, Les Baer bolt carrier assembly, gas buster, KAC two stage and a milspec M4 stock.  I also have a TA31F which I can switch for the A1 carry handle when more precise shooting is required.  I am much happier with my carbine than before, but I am not a part of the HSLD or BTDT crowd, where I am sure I could take advantage of all the "bling".

All of this is based on what I want and need.  I still like looking at all the blinged out AR's so you guys keep buying the stuff and posting pics.

The more shit you hang on your rifle, the cooler you are, right?

That rail-mounted can opener, next to the 3 flashlights, 5 different sights, and MP3 player might come in handy someday when the army of genetically modified superninjas shows up.

Or were you just referring to the "there is a machining mark on the receiver next to the magwell, so my elite rangewarrior status will be compromised" crowd?  Then again, with the cost of some of this stuff, maybe you should expect perfect machining.... hrm....

by the way... has anyone managed to mount an IPOD on thier AR yet?  Do IPODs even come in matte black (no matter, a can of Krylon solves the problem)

I went through a stage of bling loading, but recently I've taken a step back to a slightly less bling'd up rifle.  Most recently on my M4gery, I went from a PRI FSB and Vortex FH on a 14.5" barrel to a standard "F" marked FSB with an A2 FH on a 16" barrel.  At first I felt the "need" to have a 14.5" barrel, but soon realized it did nothing for me and was a PITA should I ever want to change anything, so I swapped.  From the shooting end, I haven't even noticed a difference.

If I ever get my FSB fixture machined (note to self - get that project done, already), almost all of my rifles will have an "F" marked FSB installed onto it.

The thing that blows me away are the people who get uptight about the cosmetic looks of the components - machining marks, dings, etc.  It's a rifle modeled after a battle rifle - WTF do you expect.  And, if  you shoot it like it was designed to, it will get some dings.  Wear them with pride.

An easy way to see this is to look at the size of the gear sections as opposed to the size of those sections devoted to training.

Folks will drop $900 + on an ACOG, but wont spend the same on a training course....

I like to have my rifle stock as stock can be. The only aftermarket stuff I use in any guns are magazines.

I don't like KamoKrylon, picatinny (which is godawful on my hands, I hate picatinny handguards). As far as accuracy and performance, my iron sights work just perfectly for me. But I do like the Colt pony on my ar15.

I would consider a SureFire light and a 3point sling for it, maybe an ACOG if I became obsessed with CQB. To me, an AR with all that garbage makes the gun look busier than I am. If I want that much crap, I'll buy a swiss army knife.

I have an Izzy sling on all my ARs and the most "bling" on any would I suppose simply be optics. I don't think that's very 'blingy"

I voted yes, if only because I caught myself starting to go down Bling Blvd.

Most of my accessories have simply been tried and discarded leaving only ACOG, a Giles sling, gasbuster and bi-lock for Gemtech can.  I can rest easy now and shoot that combination knowing it is what I need, and nothing more.

I fell for the 14.5" barrel thing.  Getting it assembled was a PITA and disassembling it for the 16" barrel was a PITA.  Overall, a PITA that wasn't worth the bother for just "the look".  The 16" barrel gives me superior ballistics and isn't a PITA for any type of maintenance or enhancements.  If the .mil used 16" barrels, everybody would have 16" barrels and everything else would look retarded - bet on it.
