I was wondering if it would be legal to build an AK pistol(amd-65 kit) and use the folding stock, but not have it in the open position, could you have it folded and weld the hinge so it wouldn't be able to open? Or would this still classify as a SBR? I am just wondering because I dont have time to find a rear trunnion that I can put in there for an upcoming buildfest here in VA. If anyone has any info on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all.

I was thinking about this as well but DAMN you beat me to it.
I have two ar's with collapsable stocks in the closed position, and I have a pre-ban AK that I'm putting an ACE socom stock on. Was thinking about the folder in teh closed position though. It is a shoulderfired weapon, there is no doubt about that. It meets minimum length requirements, and (for me) has no collapsable stock....

will surf and find laws on this.

i don't think its kosher now... the term rifle means any firearms INTENDED and DESIGNED to be fired from teh shoulder, but they are much clearer on teh term pistol:
" (A) a firearm which has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand...."

that short stock thing kinda kills this, no?

if i am not mistaken, the overall length of the weapon is measured with the stock extended, not folded/collapsed.

You can use the existing 65 rear trunion block. Just remove the folder from it. Some weld a small plate on the back to cover the hole.

problem with the AMD is the front grip
pistol with front grip=AOW since a pistol is designed for operation with one hand, having a pistol grip makes them think that it requires the use of both hands. I've heard discussions as to whether or not a removable grip would make it an AOW or not, but I'd stay on the safe side with this one seing as how the AOW tax is only $5. and and AOW may NEVER, EVER have a stock attatched.

how would i legally be able to get the AOW stamp, do I just get the paper work filled out, cleared thru my cleo, and send $5 to ATF? Also, is it legal to build an AOW with out a class 2 mfg. lic? if that is all it is, myself and a friend would love to do that, talk about a CHEAP krink-ish gun!!! That would be BADA$$!!hippie.gif

from what I gather, its just like building an SBR, fill out the Form 1, pay the tax, and wait for approval. when approved and stamp in hand, put the front grip on the AMD-65 pistol(sans front grip) that you had already built and enjoy!

If I recall correctly, AOWs are $200 to build, $5 to transfer.

Yes, TapperMan is correct.

If you can find a friendly Class 2 SOT, and have them put the AOW together and file the Form 1 (free for them) it will cost $5 to transfer.
If you file the Form 1 yourself, it will cost $200. But, if you ever sold it, it would transfer from then on for $5.
