here are a few pictures of the blonde, a 1949 suisse k31 with beech wood stock and of the brunette, a 1943 k31 with a walnut stock.

only $99 a pop at dunham's sports. all matching and, as you can see, in very good condition. the bores look like new. i want to take our boroscope to the throats to determine how much (or more likely, how little) these were used.

yes...my monitor is from my very first computer system. it is a 12" (10.8" viewable!) from way back in 1989. it's the longest lived component i've owned.

the sad fact is, at work i us a pair of 21" mitsubishi monitors running at 1200 x 1600! heheh!

the beech looked like it was dragged behind a truck when i got it, and the walnut one was not much better. the metal on both tifles was very well maintained, but i must admit that i spent about 4 to 6 hours on each rifle's stock.

i hate 'oversanding' old weapons, but if you would have seen the shape they were in you would probably agree that i had nothing to lose.

i started off with 100 grit (very coarse) sandpaper and worked my way down to 400 grit. the sanding took about 3 hours for each stock, taking pains to avoid the cartouches and preserve the sharp corners. the first few coats of boiled linseed oil was rubbed in with lintless clothes. the last two coats were rubbed in with 0000 steel wool. after curing, the stocks were tack ragged and matte polyurethane was sprayed on in 4 to 6 sessions.

this comes close to replicating the oem tinted varnish color and surface finish. i was going to tint some spar varnish and shoot the beech with one of my paint guns, but i really don't like working with varnish. poly doesn't get as brittle as varnish and is a better when it comes to chipping and flaking imo.

i forgot to add:

i did hot tank reblue both buttplates and cold blued the rear band on the walnut hanguard.

heheh! my truck and monitor are legendary for their ability to outlive, outlast and outperform (hmmm? that sounds like an advertisement for "survivor! campy's farm!) their contemporaries.

perhaps that is why i like old rifles. the walnut k31 is almost 62 years old and still outperforms anything i can buy from remington, winchester or browning today.

Walnuts tend to be $10 extra if that indicates the rarity. Campy was logically trying to avoid another expensive caliber, and I shared his logic until I caved and wound up with 'both' in a few weeks. Shortly after my second, Campy shared the range with one of mine and gun-lust took over. Glad I could help corrupt him for a change

Look at Swede and M39 prices over the past several years...get a K31 and case of ammo now since it will be hard to lose money if you decide you don't feel the love after shooting it. (Said by a dummy who only bought one SAR2 at $239.95 from Aim 4 years ago.)

Now to photoshop pinstripes into the finish and scope dovetails on the receiver before the pics get posted on the C&R forum.

it is a hewlett-packard 10c that i purchased in 1982.

i use a 20c at work and the "+" button is going away due to years of pounding on it. guess i'll start shopping for a new one, soon! of course, it HAS to be a hewlett-packard!

btw, jeep, you can STILL get the high-end h-p's with rpn...otherwise known as REVERSE POLISH NOTATION!!! YEEHAWW! rpn, i still love thee!

Campy what are you running in that thing? a 286 chipset? Holy shit I would have a serious fit due to the time it would take to do stuff. I just upgraded from a Pentium 4, 2 gig chip and it was seriously slow!

that's a e-machine and it's running a 2.5 gig celery. 512mb ram, on-board everything. i gave up on building boxes after 1994. they wee obsolete 6 months after i built them.

nowadays, i just buy another 'throwaway' box whenever i smoke a chip, motherboard or drive.
