Hey, that's pretty nifty. Can't beat the manly .30 cal crack combined with really light recoil.

And yeah, those former Commies are kinda dear to me.  They seem like such nice enemies compared to who we have to fight now.

Buddy of mine had Cooper make him a rifle in 7.62x39..That thing with the surplus brass cased ammo or Winchester white box will shoot 1/2 MOA or better.

This is why I laugh every time someone says something bout the 7.62x39 round not being accurate..heheheh

Hell Campy, the CZ is a better gun than the Ruger any way. You would be better off.

I think I saw an add for this rifle in the new American Rifleman.

retailing at near 6 bones, it should be selling at the $500 mark or less in the 'real world'.

Locally these go for about $450.  Nice looking, good feel, like the trigger.  HS Precision makes a composite stock for it.  Looking at doing a "switch barrel" job on it, that would allow 7.62x39, 6 mm PPC and 338 Spectre

Sweet little plinker.  Got the 30 cal can already [grin]

Around here there is a company that will tkae your old enfield, adn convert it to 7.62x39, thy can make it look like  ajungle carbine, or if it was  asporter to begin with, keep it in a sporter style.

The turn th echamber down then re-ream it, they also do somethign to the mag to make it work better

great rifles, thinking of having one done

Nice results, and my CZ452 is a great gun.

But with exc M48a Yugos at $100 and Turk 8mm under .05/rnd it'll be a while for me.

Had a beautiful Mini Mark X by Zastava in 7.62x39 a few years ago. Absolutely a beautiful rifle but would not reliably fire military ammo - had a light strike. I didn't know much then and even shot the action loose, knocking a chip out of the stock and shearing off the unreinforced recoil lug. I fixed it and sold it at a show, but I still miss it. Now you show me the 527 Carbine and I'm already reaching for my wallet! It's one of those guns you want, but can't really justify purpose-wise.

Wouldn't it be cool if it used 5 and 10 round AK mags.

Also interesting results on the shooting by Aimless, illustrating not much difference in the standard mil spec ammo (.311") and the Winchester (.308"). In fact, the Winchester looked better, yielding the smallest group. Does anyone here shoot mil spec 7.62x39 in their .308" bore Ruger Mini 30? I had one of those, too, but got rid of it in favor of the AKM under the theory that military weapons generally are more sustainable and generally work. I couldn't find good hi-cap mags for the Ruger, and there are certain parts that Ruger won't sell you, like a bolt. Strangely, I'm thinking of getting another one because a friend came into one that they don't want, but I'll definitely keep my SA85 M. This Ruger has a scope and is in perfect original condition, and I can probably get it for $295, so why not.

How hard would it be to take the 7.62x39 527 carbine and convert it to 5.45x39?  Is that even feasible?

1saxman,
Yes I only shoot wolf and silver bear in my mini 30 and had good results so far.  I was told when I bought mine in 1999 that ruger had changed the bore diameter to .310 to give decent results with both types of ammo.  The earlier mini 30's just used .308 bores with a long throat that would squeeze .311 bullets down.  This is just what I was told btw.  I really like my mini 30.  Only malfunctions were with crappy Triple K 30 round mags.  Had good results with thermold 30 round mags.  All other high caps were junk.

Just what I was thinking.  Unless I was out of school the day they covered the west going to war with Czechoslovakia.

You guys left out the coolest part of the 527.  Its a 4-6# trigger straight pull.  If you push the trigger forward about 1/8" it clicks into a 1/2# pull mode.

FWIW, the Czechs made superb weapons before and during communism..."Poldi steel is among the best steels in the world" - 1954 ed. SMALL ARMS OF THE WORLD on the Vz24...

The Czech national trait is passive resistance; they have no military heroes, and all the statues in Prague are of poets, writers, and musicians.  The national classic "Good Soldier Schweik" is about a guy who plays dumb and misinterprets his orders continually....Czechs told a friend involved in the intel world after 1990 that had it come to a showdown with the West, when Soviet tanks rolled across the Fulda gap, they would have changed road signs, ****ed up the rail system, and generally done all they could to have hamstrung the Russians. They HATE the Russkies.

Pretty girls, and the best beer on the planet (get some ORIGINAL Budweiser - Budvar - when there and you'll see what I mean.)

Anyway, I have  a CZ452 and it is an outstanding rifle at a bargain price.

A couple years ago Sportsman guide was offering sprterized small ring Mausers (Swedes and Spanish) in 7.62 X 39.  I remember the ad so well beacuse they boasted 4 inch groups at 50 yards! All for only $250!

This is a hell of a lot better of a deal.

As for the Eastern Europeans, unless you were a party member, you most likely hated the Ruskies.

Anyone wanting to read a great short book on what the Hungarians thought of the Russians, read the book. "The Bridge at Andau".  You should read it any way, it costs $2.50 and takes 3 hours to read. You will have more repect for the Eastern Europeans than you ever did before.

hey Tweak, do you have any experience with those converted Enfields? They looks pretty cool, cheaper than the CZ too.

SC,

The only converted Enfield I have experience with is my Fenian gun. .308 Ishapore, with 16" barrel, M14 flash suppressor, shortened stock with Pachmayr pad, AO scout scope base with CompML2, Parker Hale 5A receiver sight, sling and buttcuff. She's a charmer, be more charming when I get the folding stock.

people hunter er, uh 'Volksjaeger'; You are so right. I never found a reliable aftermarket magazine for the Mini 30, but I never tried the Thermold. If I ever get another one, I'll have to try the Thermold. I tweaked feed lips, followers, tried reversing springs and used special lubes trying to make those crummy mags work, but lost my confidence in the whole system as a defense weapon. That's when I got rid of it in favor of the AKM. Military stuff works.

Troy, what folding stock you going to use on your Fenian?  I've got an Ishy that's hopefully going to be back in my hands before the year's out.

I talked with a gent who converted an 870 folder for his.

The Czechs have a long standing tradition of building quality firearms and military gear.  The Skoda works was a major arms producer for many years.  That's why Germany (1938) and eventually, the Soviet Union (1945), were so anxious to acquire Czechoslovakia.

CZ bolt guns are extremely accurate.  I have one with a varmint barrel that's as good as any Remington 700.  It includes a nice adjustable single stage w/set trigger.  The set trigger can be dialed down to about 8 oz.

One more piece of trivia:  As I understand it, Czechoslovakia is the only other country in the world that doesn't require firearms licensing/registration.

? I assume you mean me. I started to go the 870 route but the process became too complex with having to permanently attach the stock to the pistol grip to maintain the 26" minimum.

I'll wait until VAL comes out with their folder for this.
