Hello to all,

Pretty soon I'll be taking my AK out for it's first time to be sighted in. Can anyone tell me how close I can sight in that will put my bullet impact at about 100 yards??? This is using standard grain 122 "Wolf" ammo.

Thanks,

Impala

50 yards/ meters. Your sights are marked in meters, but at 50 yards the difference shouldn't be a problem.

100 meters = 109 yrds.
200 meters =  218 yrds.
300 meters = 327  yrds.

IIRC the bullet crosses the line of sight @ 50 yards on it's way to a 100 yard zero.

most say use this method. shoot at 25 yards and set your rear sight to 100. try to hit your target 1 inch low. this will be very close to dead on at a real 100 yards

they say 25 yards because most ranges will have that distance.
if you have access to a 100 yard range then use that next to verify. I had to tweak mine a touch but at 100 yards the target I was using was very small and I couldnt even see it in the sights.

for me ive found I shoot quickly, and when I do my hits end up being 1-2 inches high at 25 yards. So I set my front post to still hit 1 inch low at 25 yards but shooting fast. So just take that into consideration if it applies to how you shoot

I use a cheap $30 laser bore sight from midway, and I can set it at 25 yards at home and be dead on, this way I save some money on ammo. Plus that laser bore sight has tips to do most all calibers so it comes in very handy for all weapons. If you set up a car reflector, or reflector tape you can use the laser at 50 yards too, but the dot is pretty big. Never tried it at 100 yards

Also I read if you set to battle zero and shoot at 20 yards you want to be dead center of target

set to 100m on your rear sight.  make sure its close at 25 yards/m then sight in for real at 100.  once you are satisfied set the the battle settingif desired.

This is good advice. Just to clarify, the '1' on your sight is '100'. The letter is the battlesight zero, same as 300. This is for combat where you may be shooting at any distance without taking the time to adjust the sight. Aiming at center of mass on a man-sized target, you will get hits with it. You'll need a combo front sight tool for adjusting windage and elevation. Use a penetrating solvent on the front sight drum the day before taking it to the range. Take your time and try to do your best at the 100 yd range. It can be very difficult to shoot good enough groups with the AK and inexpensive ammo to make sight adjustment meaningful. In other words, you can shoot hundreds of rounds and spend all day chasing the sights. This is why you need to get it right at 25. The purpose of trying at 100 is to possibly make adjustments, not starting over. You can do this by shooting 10-rd grps as carefully as you can, retrieving the target after every group, measuring and determining the center of the group then measuring to the point of aim and calculating the sight correction. Its a lot of trouble, but its also the only way to get it right and avoid losing all your work.

Thanks guys/gals for your replies. I figured it was simular to the 223 caliber method. Anyway gotta go to work so thanks again. I'll report back later what my results are after the first outing.

Sorry guys, the info above is not quite correct.

You set the rear sight on '2' and have the target at 25yds (technically, 21m or 23.1yds) if the AK is in 7.62mm

You set the rear sight on '3' and have the target at 25yds if the AK is in 5.45mm or 5.56mm

Of course, you still verify your results with the rear sight set back to '1' and the target at 100yds.

This is straight out of the Russian manual.

Vellcrow,

OK I'll try your method as you prescribed and go from there.

The Russian manual method is okay, but you can still sight in at 25 with the rear sight set on '1' by simply aiming at the center and adjusting the front sight so it hits 1" low. Neither method is incorrect. I didn't mention using an offset at 25 because others had already posted it. So you could start at 25, move to 50 where it basically would be at zero, then on to 100 to see if you could fine-tune it. This trajectory is so flat between 50 and 100 that its impossible to shoot close enough to tell the difference.

Vellcrow,

I'll take al this into consideration when I get to the range! Right now I don't know if my range will allow my ammo now cuz it's evil bi-metal. What a bummer.
